Following up on this post, Eaglet eventually did report to me that “Shout” is okay, especially the chorus, but they don’t like how otherwise the music is “too loud” and obscures the vocals. Fair enough.

Following up, sort of, on this post, school has officially noticed that several fifth-graders have been playing soccer on the upper field and are now sending recess monitors up there, making it no longer as fun, according to Eaglet. I can totally see that.

Entirely separately, Eaglet admitted that, a few years ago, they slept with a large pile of stuffies** because they didn’t want any to feel left out, and sometimes while falling asleep they imagined one of them coming to life. “I mean, having your own personal Catbus* would be so cool.” Entirely yes—yes, it would.


* Totoro merch in their room includes four (or five?) Totoro stuffies of various sizes, a Catbus stuffie, and wall stickers of Mei + two totoros + many soot sprites. This household very much Team Totoro.
** All but one were recently evicted to the beanbag chair, to make space on the bed.

It was a rare glimpse of their imaginative life. We've gotten enough details to know it's fairly rich -- and they usually keep it fairly deep, except when anxiety brings it out. (When very young, we used to gauge their stress level by the Monster Threat Index -- how many times at bedtime we had to check for monsters in closet etc.)

when aglet was in third grade, they would go play tackle football on the ice behind the trees so the teachers couldn't see. this did not work out catastrophically, but it did not work out well.

Eaglet has hinted that the issue is not so much the roughness of play but of language.

Since I learned on the soccer field how to speak fluent Spanish by dropping in cusses while trying to remember the next word, I can sympathize. (Yes, this did make my fluency in the classroom worse, with the extra effort of censoring myself.)
