A scene from contemporary life:
Eaglet, putting down their tablet, looking pleased with themself: “I just found the title of this cool song I heard—it’s ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World’.”
Me, successfully not showing my amusement: “It’s a great song, isn’t it?”
Eaglet, not bothering to hide their surprise: “You know it?”
Me, successfully not saying that I wrote a parody, my first year of university, called “Everybody Wants to Get an A”: “Yup. Yanno, it’s almost 40 years old.”
Eaglet, who has met a lot of ’80s culture that has not aged well: “What the flip? Really? And they made it sound so [flails hands a moment] modern?!”
Me, successfully not saying that Tears For Fears are partly responsible, along with other mid-80s synthpop artists, for the sounds of contemporary music: *hums the instrumental opening*
Eaglet: “TBH I don’t like that so much as the [sings] ‘everybody wants to rule the world’ parts.”
Me: [nods] “The band has another song you might like, ‘Shout’.”
Eaglet: [nods] “I’ll look it up … later.”
TBH I don’t think they’ve actually done that last.

+ : streaming music services make it much easier for kids to find good music from earlier eras. Today while running errands, SteelyKid put on a playlist that includes "I Will Survive," "Take On Me," "Under Pressure," and other songs I remember fondly from my youth.
- : SteelyKid refers to this as "the 1900s music" playlist.
