When you are the size of the USA, anywhere in England is in the vicinity of anywhere else in England, surely?

Ha ha. Nope -- a reasonable measure of distance is drive (or other transport) time, and any place that takes more than an hour or two to cross has pieces not in the vicinity of each other.
