In the Department of Continuing Adventures with Small Animals, Spike the bearded dragon is back with his family. Through this experience, Eaglet has learned that they a) love Spike, b) like bearded dragons but not as much as snakes, and c) hate taking care of live crickets. I am totally on board with c). Dead crickets quickly rot to foetid.

Meanwhile, a female betta named Spicy, who has been resident on Eaglet’s desk for a couple months, came home today to a new aquarium on their dresser. The kids in Eaglet’s class this year earned class money for desk pets (choice of betta or hissing cockroach) by completing classroom chores or selling items at their weekly swap-meet. Eaglet decided, based on how our cats hunt cockroaches, that a betta would be safer here. Listening to how friends have been helping each other get their desk pets faster through loans has been wonderful, even at a remove.

Tomorrow is the last day of second grade.

She is! We are going to miss her. She didn't come across well during the 2 1/2 months of remote learning, but in person she's great, and all her kids love her and say they'll miss her next year. She's from China and usually team-teaches with a native-English-speaker, handling the Chinese half of their instruction, but she's been good at the English Language Arts part on her own.

Ah, that's awesome.

It is. This group of kids has been notably supportive of each other since they started kindergarten together (all their teachers have commented on this), even through the disruptions of the pandemic and dramas around the self-proclaimed Popular Girls that started up this year.
