I'm giving that whisk-round scholarship on "low-hanging fruit" the side-eye. My own cursory check of the resources now available to me turned up a proto-reference in Sir Francis Bacon.

It is most extremely annoying that Google's ngram viewer cuts off at 1800. All the really interesting stuff is before then...
