Did I know that there's a Roman-built lighthouse still in operation in Spain? Heavily modified over the millennia and probably was not in operation for at least part of the middle ages, but still. Looks pretty good. (via)

Did I know about the legend of Norumbega, the Eldorado of Maine? Or probably in Maine, given the natural vagueness of legends. (via this headnote to a poem by Whittier)

Did I know that Equador and Peru fought a border war in 1995? I can't remember a single news story about this.

What surprising things have you recently only just found out about?

I knew about the lighthouse, since I am physically in Spain, but I didn't know about the other stuff.

Today I learned that although I have a US bank account and am an official IRS "US Person," I can't create a Kickstarter campaign unless I am physically in the United States.

Nothing of great note. I did not know that Mariah Carey sang a Christmas Song I actually like...

It is currently illegal to coast down a steep hill in Neutral drive in Washington state.

These days, there is little time for research that exercises my dendrites, but plenty of time to learn about the things that feel important to Joe and Jill on the street.

If your card strip is wearing out on your credit card/debit card, wrap the card in a plastic bag and swipe again. It works.

Sigh...
