On LOTR: I'm always a bit taken aback by "critics" who claim it's badly written. It isn't to the modern taste for fast, short, and blunt, but it's one of the great prose epics in English. Blows most of subsequent fantasy clean out of the water--in fact I find the majority of it unreadable unless I skim asfastasIcanforthestoryjustthestory.

And that includes some works praised for their "beautiful" prose.

Ja. Until you managed to not pay the slightest bit of attention to Tolkien's sense of rhythm, it's beautful. Even the story-draggy bits.
