We are in the middle of a particularly wet round of monsoon storms, with off-and-on rain through the day and night for a couple days. Yesterday morning as I left for work, there was a band of haze, not even mist, stretched across the waist of the mountains.

Even though I come from erie, on the lake, I don't think I have the accent. And Patrick confirms this. Of course, my mom is southern and my dad is from further south in pa, so it makes sense.

I'm from Milwaukee, and I have that shift. The word "cat" has a diphthong. But I do hear it, and I teach English as a foreign language, so I try not to pass it on to my students, who need a more standard accent.
