c) I'm still startled when I see myself in the mirror.

a) I'm still startled when I see the phrase "growing a beard" applied to myself, because of slang meanings.

b) I'm still unsure how long I'm going to keep it, partly because of the slang meanings.

I didn't used to. The growth finally, at over 40, filled in enough that a beard doesn't look scuzzy-thin on the cheeks.

Well, aside from the general sense of growing up, "growing a beard" is sometimes used to mean the opposite of jumping the shark, plus a "beard" is a woman who goes out with a gay man to make him look more manly i.e. straight. And I'm sure there's other's I'm not hip enough to know.
