Last night was, in this time zone and hemisphere, the shortest night of the year, and today is longer than yesterday: it appears* the sun has shifted from its solstice poise and is starting north once again. A mixed blessing that, living in a desert, but it is still reassuring to know that the cycle continues as it always has -- that the shadows that mark our time follow our gnomons, that the lights of our concerns continue to burn in the night.
