" ... absuelto de la espera / sin perecer en la mar / de las sirenas"*
Since it might be useful,** a Dear Yulemouse letter.
(ObTranslation: Yuletide is a end-of-year-holiday fanfiction exchange for seldom-written-in-fandoms -- more info here. I'm participating again this year, doing only public domain fandoms. This is a note for the anonymouse who has been assigned my requests.)
Dear Yulemouse,
If you've been assigned to write me something, it's because you offered to write a fic for at least one of the Kokinshu, the Icelandic Sagas, or Ovid's Heroides, which means you already know why that one, at least, is awesome. They all are, really. And I'm sure anything you write will be too.
When I requested "anything" in the way of a Kokinshu fic, I meant it. The possible prompts are just that, suggestions if you were looking for them. If your muse finds an idea interesting and you feel passionate about a story, it'll come through and so be interesting. Surprise is my delight. (For more sidenotes on this my fascination with classical Japanese poetry, you can dig through my translation tag and my poetry journal, though I don't know how useful you'll find it.) (BTW, the prompt I claimed was an exchange? I conflated 938 and its headnote with other actual pairs of poems, like 556-557. Sorry 'bout the brainfart.)
For the Sagas and Heroides, my requests for a crossover fic and an answering letter, respectively, are guidelines only, with same caveat about passion: if you have a better idea, run with it.
* "I keep searching for you even though / I know that it's impossible to have / anything more than a dream | absolved of waiting / without perishing alone in the sea / of sirens," according to the artist's official translation. Srsly, folks, buy his stuff -- he good.
** And it seems the Thing To Do.
