Breaking news from the fast-moving halls of paleontology: the triceratops isn't.

That is to say, it isn't a separate species, but rather has been identified as a juvenile form of the somewhat similar torosaurus. Transitional forms and everything. Real deal.

We will now pause to mourn the passing dismissal of an icon.

If I could draw webcomics, I would draw a comic of a triceratops sitting on Pluto. The former dinosaur and the former planet could bewail their fates together. It would look sort of like Le Petit Prince.

Except that (according to the NPR story I heard yesterday) triceratops was discovered first, so it gets to keep the name. Torosaurus doesn't. ;)
