Follow-up bookmarkage for all those Eddas. There's several translations online, including Auden & Taylor, Bellows with Norse text, with commentary, and plain, Thorpe, and Cottle. There's also the Volsungsaga of Morris & Magnusson and other Old Norse verse by Hollander. The best English verse among these is Auden's, not surprisingly, but possibly the most intelligible is the Bellows w/ commentary. (Of the common deadtree versions, Hollander's reads the smoothest, Larrington's notes get the most annoying, and Terry is mostly just there; all three disappoint me.)

ObVerse: A song in Njal's Saga calls battle "a woof of warriors   woven by valkyries / with a warp of red blood." Talk about compelling images. (ObConfession: I translated the kennings.)

I've mentioned before that I'm a Robert Lang fanboy, so I was pleased to see this profile in The New Yorker.

I may not have a personal jet-pack, but a personal blimp just might be in my reach.

Memo to self: The large citrus fruit is neither prunella nor plumbago, but a pomelo. Please stop confusing the nice people. 'K?

If they can breed a spineless prickly pear as cattle fodder, why can't they breed a spineless ornamental cholla?

I'm getting a little worried by this Betsy Vornue, and the way she lays Helnig's hair then sells shabbat.

The personal blimp looks like it came from an old-time carnival. But is is very cool. Seems there are lots-o-cool links on that same page too.

Cholla thorns are truly wicked, I agree.

Thanks for the linky-loos.

I can see why.

Because it's the spines that make the cholla so pretty! Though I suppose they could make a bit less excruciatingly painful... or at least genetically remove the semi-automatic rocket-launching feature.
