The past five years, I've left for work at perisunrise -- about half the year, the sun is up as I head east (and a little north) and half the year, it's behind the mountain. Which means I've been watching the analemma lissajou through the sky with the changing seasons.

Dawn is a lovely time in the desert -- especially those few minutes before the sun peeks over the peaks, with the northern range staining pink from the tops down. Color seeps into the world with the growing light, and the nocturnal and crepuscular denizens are still active -- twitter, tweet, hop, scuttle, yip. The desert is most alive when it's cool. Even the ants are relaxed and unhurried along their portages.

I'm not at work today because we've moving buildings. I regret leaving an office for a cube, and I regret no longer working across the street from Trader Joe's and Bookman's, and I resent being told to take PTO because they haven't a place for me while the boxes are schlepped. But possibly I most regret that I will now be heading south (and a little west) to work instead of facing the analemma.

That's lovely. Analemma and Lissajou.

Alas, I work in a lead-lined vault, and wouldn't see if the sun and moon danced hornpipes in heavens. Rats.
