United States President Donald Trump is out here creating his own Avengers, but instead of saving people from perpetual doom, this superhero group will possibly be bringing in more trouble, not just for Americans but for others around the world.

On January 19, 2026, several reports emerged online that suggested that the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, had been invited by Donald Trump to join his Board of Peace, which was “formed to solidify Peace in the Middle East” and “to embark on a bold new approach to resolving Global Conflict!” The X page called Republicans Against Trump even uploaded a picture of the two-page proposal letter that had been sent to the Belarusian president by the White House in Washington, the opening remarks of which read:

yarning
Went to yarn group Sunday despite an earlier migraine and had a pretty good time. Worked on a donation hat. I've been all hats all the time, working down my yarn stash, as I haven't had any kickbunny sales. I did sell 3 catnip-silvervine stuffed hearts. It's supposed to get down into the teens this weekend, with possible snow. I hope things will be clear for yarn group.

Friday: allergy shot. Tuesday: medical transportation assessment, which went fairly well. I'll hear whether I qualify in 2-3 weeks. Today: pharmacy & first shingles shot. I need to get labs done, but I should wait until the shingles side effects pass.

After some trouble getting ahold of me, my sister has let me know that our mother died this morning.

(So maybe don't assume I remember anything I'm supposed to remember this week?)
My sister and her husband continue to be awesome in these matters. As does Juan.

OK. Gonna go have food and meds now.

Still in the hospital.

Rough night.

Basically, the issue is trying to get my guts to function again. They pretty much quit after the trauma of the infection and the surgery. So I have to be able to digest and pass things through the system without throwing up before I can leave.

There's been some progress, so I'm hopeful.

This is a disgusting process, lol. I still recommend avoiding this altogether!

At this point, finding someone who isn’t obsessing over Heated Rivalry is like looking for the Loch Ness monster. There’s a small chance they exist, but logic suggests otherwise.

So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that fans of the steamy Crave show (on Max in the US) come from all walks of life, but even so the latest icon to show her enthusiasm for the hockey romance drama is quite the name: tennis legend Billie Jean King.

Alamo Drafthouse just announced a change that will have some fans up in arms. The beloved theater chain is reportedly moving away from the paper and pen style concessions ordering method that many associate with Alamo.

This policy, as it existed, helped reinforce Alamo Drafthouse’s strict No Phones during screenings policies. If you’ve been to a movie theater since 2020, you’re no doubt aware that people are more lax about phone usage in dark theaters than they’ve been in the previous 20 years. Folks got used to being inside and forgot their manners completely in the ensuing time since 2020.

Just yesterday, several sources, including news outlets, claimed that Donald Trump had sent out a formal invitation to Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to become a part of his ambitious “Board of Peace” meant to “solidify Peace in the Middle East and, at the same time, to embark on a bold new approach to resolving Global Conflict!” Now it is being reported that Lukashenko has accepted Trump’s proposal, with videos of him signing documents as formality before joining the panel having emerged online, creating quite the stir among people.

For several days this week and the week before that, there has been significant gossip surrounding Trump’s “Board of Peace.” The chatter has primarily centred on the potential members of the committee and what their inclusion in it could mean at the world level. Some of the names that emerged in the last few days in relation to the body and have since been confirmed to have received a formal invitation from Trump include French President Emmanuel Macron, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Argentinian President Javier Milei, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. While some of these world leaders are assessing the details of the proposal, a few have already accepted it. As mentioned previously, the latest person to join Trump’s endeavours in bringing peace to the world is Alexander Lukashenko.

Official call for Beta Readers

This is the official call for Beta Readers.

Things you need to know upfront:

This is a Beta Read; which is not as nitpicky as a line-by-line hunting of tyops, but requires attention to story, character motivation, setting, narrative flow -- you know: the easy things.

This is a volunteer gig.  Nobody's getting paid, except in Auctorial Gratitude, which means that I will with great joy list you on the Acknowledgements Page of the finished book (unless you don't want me to, ref 2(3) below).

At this point in the proceedings these are the things I need to know in order to preserve the last rags of my sanity and turn the book in on time:

1 Does the story make sense/keep your interest?

2 Are there deadends/extraneous/unresolved story lines? Tell me what they are

3 Does the story and/or a particular section lag? are you confused? Tell me where.

4 Have any of the characters changed their name? If so, tell me where and who.

5 Anything else that bothered you as a reader.

5a If you find a particularly ugly or confusing sentence and feel compelled to mention it, you must give me a search string so that I can find it. Again, typos/grammatical errors are NOT the reason for the season.

6 A Vow of Secrecy is required: You may not reveal the plot (or, in fact, the title), or any details of the novel in question.

7 There's a fast turnaround: I'll need comments no later than February 11.

If this sounds like something you'd like to do, and can commit to, here's what you need to do:

1 Email me at liadenuniverse AT gmail.com (where AT=@)

2 Tell me: (1) your preferred format (.doc, .odt, .rtf. I can probably cobble up an epub, but it will be ugly); (2) where I should email the file (even if it's the address you're writing from); (3) how you would like your name to appear on the Acknowledgements Page of the finished novel (if you don't want your name to appear, explicitly state that, please).

Because we're scattered throughout a zillion time zones and countries, I will be taking volunteers until Friday, January 23, 9am US Eastern Time.

In the interests of preserving the above-referenced rags of my sanity, only those people who have been accepted will receive an email. If you have not received an acceptance by Saturday, January 24, noon US Eastern Time, know that I love you, and honor you for standing up, but that all positions are filled.

NOTE: You do not have to be USian to be accepted as a Beta Reader, but you do need to realize that I am USian, and be certain you can accommodate our crazy spelling and sentence structure.

. . . I really do think that's it.

Let the volunteering begin.

I'm starting to seriously consider selling my VINTAGE Fluevog Swordfish shoes and boots. I love them. LOVE. I never wear them, because even tho' the 3" heel are wide and sturdy, my back has made it pretty clear that those shoes and boots are not made for walking. Not for me.

I'm tempted to hold onto the boots so I can use them as vases for dried flowers (I can't find the image on Pinterest, but I saw something similar done and it looked great), but I will first need to have a probably convoluted discussion with the Stroppy One about putting outdoor footwear on any furniture, even after they've been carefully cleaned. (His weirdness around this is too long to get into here, but it starts from a superstition around not putting footwear on chairs or tables.)

---

INCREDIBLY shallow whining related to the state of the world (because if I start thinking seriously about things, I freeze in panic): I guess I should have purchased the pretty pretty dress from the Ukrainian designer earlier, because who knows if the $USD will be worth anything and if anyone outside the US will be willing to ship anything to a US address.

---

I need help from the sewing and costuming hive mind! I have a many dresses like this. (Mine don't have the wide sash/belt.) The skirt is two rectangles gathered at the waist, with the pockets inset at those side seams. I want to occasionally lift the skirt to about knee-length so I can wear the dress with different skirts. I've tried actual skirt lifters, and they didn't work well. I tried ribbons sewn on the outside of the waist with matching ribbons sewn on the inside at the point where the ruffle is attached to the skirt, thus catching a bundle of the skirt in a loop of ribbon that shows on the outside. (The Madwoman in the Attic saw this attempt, clutched her head, said, "NO", and left the room.) So I'm out of ideas. Help?

Dating back to 1909, Jacob’s Ladder was originally constructed from local jarrah wood by Joseph Huck and Sons. Reconstructed in the 1960’s using concrete and steel, the staircase is an iconic shortcut that takes you from the banks of Perth’s Swan River to Kings Park in a matter of minutes.

The gruelling ascent may seem daunting as you gaze up the narrow, steep steps zigzagging back and forth out of sight, but it is well worth the effort.

At the top, you may think you’ve reached its namesake’s destination as you’re greeted by both panoramic views back across the river and the beautiful lush landscape of Kings Park.

Local fitness fanatics use the steps regularly for exercise, and it’s amazing to watch them complete multiple laps as you sit at the top on the conveniently placed bench catching your breath or sipping from the water fountain.

Finished Life after Life and now agree with the colleague who said at the book group last week that she thought it was good. All the lives Ursula might have lived was a question that remained fascinating right to the end. And the book just kept surprising me. It also made me think about Making History by Stephen Fry, which I read years and years ago, where trying to alter the past to stop Hitler is a key plot point.

Currently reading
Still reading Challenger. No progress on anything else I'm still in the middle of, but I started reading Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik. It's been on my to-read list for a couple of years now, but it only occurred to me to check if it was available in the library a couple of weeks ago. For some reason I expected it wouldn't be, but it was actually easily available in the central library sci-fi/fantasy section.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy is not too keen to join Donald Trump’s highly ambitious “Board of Peace”, and the reason is not him. It is Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin.

On January 20, 2026, an approximately 35-second audio clip emerged online, including social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), in which Volodymyr Zelenskyy could be heard expressing reluctance to join Trump’s “Board of Peace” over Russia’s participation in the same. Before I get any further, I would like to give my two cents on the matter or rather express my frustration over it. First things first, who invites two warring countries to be a part of a committee that is supposed to tackle peace and conflict resolution, and secondly, why is Russia a part of a panel that promotes peace when all it has done in the last couple of years is the exact opposite, by repeatedly attacking Ukraine? Anyways, coming back to where we were, Zelenskyy not only has a problem with Russia’s participation in Trump’s Board of Peace, but he also has an issue with Belarus’ involvement in the panel, as the two countries are allies, which makes them Ukraine’s enemies.

Federal agents are supposed to be trained to use the least amount of force possible when making arrests. However, the recent killing of Renee Good by agent Jonathan Ross in Minneapolis, Minnesota, contributed to people in the United States feeling unsafe.

Recent evidence from the Houston Chronicle and ProPublica proves that ICE agents have acted in dangerous and lethal ways. Immigration officers placed Arnoldo Bazan, a young high school student living in the Houston area, in a chokehold. This was while making an arrest of his father.

I did indeed get in bed by 9:30 last night and slept pretty hard. I probably could have slept even more, but 11 hours is a pretty good night!

For some reason, I woke up with Barely Breathing by Duncan Sheik in my head, and when I wondered to [tumblr.com profile] angelgazing whatever happened to him, she said he co-wrote Spring Awakening, which I did not know, so good for him! From one-hit wonder to Tony winner!

On the Mets front, they finally got a centerfielder in Luis Robert Jr. I guess if he can stay healthy, he'll be an upgrade over last year, offensively at least, though I am still a Tyrone Taylor fan for his A+ defense. #better call tyrone

In other sports news, my attempt to get interested in basketball seems to have done serious damage to the Knicks. They have been losing a lot lately. Plus, everyone I mentioned it to was like, don't do that. I didn't realize people in my wider circle felt that way about basketball. I guess there's always the Liberty! I should figure out when that season starts. Or the Sirens for hockey, but I don't think they've been very good either. Just a bad time all round for NY sports, I guess. And it's not like I'm a fair weather fan, though this certainly sounds like it - it's just I'd like to root for a team that isn't completely terrible, you know? As a treat!

On the books front, there is finally cover art and a real blurb for Dungeon Crawler Carl 8: Parade of Horribles, but still no Kindle* or e-book edition, so I broke down and pre-ordered the hardcover. (I can't do audiobooks. I've tried.) I also decided to do a reread of the series, because I've been trying to map out all the various stuff that needs resolving - and it is A LOT - so I wanted it to be fresh in my mind. So at some point there will be a post that is basically me as that Charlie Day-at-the-murder-board meme trying to figure it all out. *hands*

*I realize that I probably need to do a "free trial" of Kindle Unlimited to get the Kindle edition but I do not want to do that at this time. As the release date gets closer, we'll see if a Kindle edition shows up and I end up cancelling the hardcover, as I would prefer not to buy a hardcover tbh. I have all the rest on kindle, which is where I do 99.5% of my book-reading these days.

So anyway, I guess for the Wednesday reading meme, I just finished a reread of book 1 of Dungeon Crawler Carl and started rereading book 2: Carl's Doomsday Scenario. And I will probably read book 3: The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook after that and so on and so forth. *wry*

taylor swift and blake lively together

Once again, Taylor Swift has been brought into the It Ends With Us legal drama between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni. New court documents have been unsealed surrounding the case, as part of Lively’s ongoing lawsuit over Baldoni’s conduct as director and star of the film. The actress alleges, among other thing, that Baldoni sexual harassed her and created a hostile work environment.

These documents include records of some texts between Lively and Swift, who has been friends with the actress for years and is the godmother of her children. In the texts, Lively refers to Baldoni as “this doofus director of my movie,” describing him as “a clown” and joking that he “thinks he’s a writer now.”

man shares cartier experience (l) cartier storefront (c) man holding cartier bracelet (r)

A man from New York who currently lives in Austin faced a shocking price tag when he brought a Cartier love bracelet in-store for a routine repair. To replace just two diamonds that fell out of his 10-year-old bracelet, it would cost $6,000.

That’s a price that many people, including TikTok user Arnold Ruelas (@arnoldaruelas), are not willing to spend, especially considering the fact that the replacement of just two diamonds is over half the cost of the entire bracelet. Ruelas took to the internet to express some frustration with the pricepoint, emphasizing that he can’t wear the Cartier bracelet as often without the replacement, but still wants to keep it.

Amid the celebrities and the glitz and glamour, the Golden Globes always manage to find ways to surprise us. The award show is still being spoken about over a week later… and we have a very funny mystery surrounding Leonardo DiCaprio to thank for that.

DiCaprio, who was nominated for his work in One Battle After Another, went viral for a lot of reasons during this year’s Globes. The very specific jokes host Nikki Glaser made about him during the opening monologue. The funny sight of him and his co-star Sean Penn sitting next to each other in such a formal setting. And one specific moment caught on camera, where DiCaprio appears to be yapping to somebody about the award-winning Netflix juggernaut KPop Demon Hunters.

Under Donald Trump’s regime, since the beginning of last year, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been exercising extreme power over people residing in the United States.

Although their job is to crack down on undocumented immigrant populations, or as Trump and his minions like to call “illegal aliens”, they have also been targeting a lot of American people, and they are obviously not a huge fan of that and are expressing their grievances regarding the same.

One thing I probably like (hate to put it this way) about Donald Trump is his transparency and honesty about his personality. He doesn’t try to hide the fact that he is trying to become a dictator or attempting to wage war with foreign nations, or that, generally, he is just a weird dude with a lot of power; he just talks about it and owns it.

During a press briefing held at the White House on Tuesday, Trump made some concerning comments about the Gulf of Mexico, which have left a lot of people confused and, honestly, worried. In an excerpt from his address, which is currently being heavily shared on social media, including popular platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Trump can be seen engaging in some light-hearted banter with the audience while discussing the Gulf of Mexico, which has recently been renamed to the Gulf of America as per an executive order. Talking about the name change, Trump joked that he had wanted to rename the area to “Gulf of Trump” after his family name and not what it is now, but that he was scared that people would come after him for the decision. He said:

Donald Trump posts altered map of the US including Venezuela, Cuba, Greenland, and Canada.

On Jan. 20, 2026, Donald Trump posted an AI-generated image featuring a map with the U.S. borders expanded to include Canada, Greenland, Cuba, and Venezuela under the American flag. Now we can’t help but ask, can someone take away Trump’s AI subscriptions immediately, please?

After first posting a deranged, shameless AI image of waving the American flag over Greenland at 1 a.m. on his Truth Social, Trump didn’t stop. He created and posted another AI image of him meeting with European leaders in the White House. The room included French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, among others.

Donald Trump and the White House posts an AI-generated image of Greenland as US territory

Last time we checked, there was no press conference, diplomatic announcement, or negotiation update on Greenland. Yet, Donald Trump posted an image of himself and his goons hoisting the American flag over Greenland’s soil. And the White House followed.

This week, Trump probably forgot to take his sleeping pills again. At around 1 am on Jan. 20, he posted an AI-generated image of himself standing on Greenlandic soil, hoisting the American flag. He is flanked by JD Vance and Marco Rubio, standing triumphantly in a frozen landscape, planting the flag. Meanwhile, a sign in the foreground reads “GREENLAND – U.S. TERRITORY – EST. 2026.”

. . . speaking of words I don't get to use nearly enough . . .

I am informed by Many Concerned Persons that almost everything I posted last night was glitchy in one way or another, so! Below is what I posted last night under the Liaden Read-Along on splinteruniverse.com.  Follows the whole of what I posted.

So, what happened here?

Some people have noticed that the Liaden Read-Along has, to put it gently, foundered.

Some people, not necessarily the same people, have wondered what the heck is going on with that.

I will explain.

For those who are short of time and impatient with explanations, or excuses, the short form is: I was over-ambitious.

That’s it.  You may move on, as the rest of what I’m going to say past this point is an elaboration on that single fact.

Still with me?

OK.

So — over-ambitious.  I had a book to finish — not due until mid-April, but I had already missed two self-imposed deadlines for producing a draft that was complete enough that I could ask beta readers for help.  Ordinarily — ah.  Old speech forms. What I mean to say is — Previously, I would have talked out scenes, concepts and characters with Steve and he would, in essence, since I’m Lead on this book, help me catch unfruitful discursions on the fly.  I no longer have that luxury, and so find that I don’t know how long it actually takes to write a book, single-brained — thus the missed deadlines.

The alert reader will have noticed that mid-April isn’t getting any further away, so I — pushed to make it to An Ending, basically ignoring everything else in the process.

I wasn’t helped in my last minute push by the manifestation of Murphy, who decreed that I would catch a “viral something” just after the new year, so I couldn’t write for a few days.

However!  I have just achieved the Good Enough for Rock ‘n Roll Draft and will be putting out a call for Beta Readers.

Which means I’ll have a couple weeks to catch up on all that stuff I let slide.

Including commentary on the Liaden Books.

I will not be continuing in a chapter-by-chapter sort of way — for one thing, I’ve been reading in the evenings, and I’m half-way through Carpe Diem, while the commentary stalled at Chapter Six in Agent of Change — and for another, that really wasn’t working for me.

What I will be doing is commenting on the books, on things that struck me, surprises, dismays, and reflections of Real Life into fiction.

And that?  Is where we are.  Thanks to everyone for your enthusiasm for the concept of a read-along, and I hope you’ll continue to read on until the end of Diviner’s Bow.

I certainly intend to do so.

Snowflake Challenge 11: Granting Wishes

This challenge is a follow up to Challenge #5. You've made your own wishlist, now it's time to grant someone else's wish from theirs! This can be as simple as answering a question to creating something from scratch, one wish or many wishes. Let your inspiration run wild!

In your own space, grant someone's wish from Challenge #5. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it and include a link to your own post with the wishes you granted if you feel comfortable doing so.

Be sure to check out other people's creations, whether they're granting your wish or someone else's. If you post any granted wishes elsewhere, we'd love it if you link them to this post
.
