2026/013: Lingo: A Language Spotter's Guide to Europe — Gaston Dorran, translated by Alison Edwards
In autonomous Greenland, Danish initially retained more official functions than in the autonomous Faroe Islands. But that has since changed as well: in 2009, Kalaallisut became the one and only official administrative language. With this move, Greenland achieved a unique position: the only country of the Americas (yes, Greenland is part of the Americas), from Canada all the way down to Chile, where the indigenous language doesn’t play second fiddle to that of its colonial master. [p. 56]

Subtitled 'Around Europe in Sixty Languages' in some editions, 'A Language-Spotter’s Guide to Europe' in others, this is an entertaining and readable discussion of linguistic diversity in Europe. Read more... )

Oh good: the problem with my Kobo not showing up in Calibre was as easy to fix as I hoped it would be: dodgy USB cable. Phew. (I still think of this kobo as new, but it is seven or eight years old now.)

So I have a lot of new-to-it books on there now, which is exciting. Good timing, since I'm off to London for three fucking days tomorrow.

And despite D's efforts at de-DRMing the ebook he got me for my birthday, the way for me to read it turns out to be to just log in as him on the Bookshop app. Stupid DRM! I've got a bunch of vouchers to spend on bookshop.org too, and it'll probably still be more worth my while to get ebooks than paper books, but it's not as sure a thing as the calculation would be otherwise.

Still, it's been nice to read the first 10% of my birthday present.

Today would have been my mother's 79th birthday. It's been 3.5 years, I still miss her.

Her sister, my aunt, is in hospital following a stroke last week, and not expected to recover. My cousins are on their way to Australia (possibly there by now) and hoping to arrive in time to say goodbye.

I walked to work this morning in a downpour with angsty-sad music in my headphones, and let myself cry it out while no-one was watching. In the last few minutes of my walk, the sun briefly shone through the clouds, and the music algorithm played me something more upbeat. I took in the moment of beauty, and walked on.

[personal profile] hannah asked: I'd love to hear you talk about assorted public transportation options you've taken while traveling, both domestically and internationally, and whether or not any stuck out to you for any reason.

Domestically: Well, it's practically a German cliché to complain about Die Bahn, but the truth is that while it truly is in a bad state, due to sixteen years of conservative ministers of transport defining their office as "lobbying for Mercedes, BMW and Audi" and endlessly delaying necessary repairs of the railway system, I still consider our public transport system my favourite way to travel within Germany. Both the trains, and in cities the busses and streetcars and underground trains. In most cases, it's possible to reach any given destination by train and from the railway station by local public transport. And one great invention that was added in, I think, the second Pandemic year, was Das Deutschlandticket, meaning a ticket you pay per month and which you can use for all public transport within Germany that is not - forgive me using now traumatizing initials - ICE or IC. (ICE in Germany means our fastest trains, to put it simply. ICs are second fastest trains. Both are the type of trains which can bring you from Munich to Berlin in less than five hours.) Which means that if, say, you live in Munich like me, and go to a conference in Hamburg, you do not have to buy extra tickets to use the public transport system in Hamburg, you can simply use your Deutschlandticket . Very neat indeed.

Anyway, the terrible state of our railway system means that currently practically every second long distance train is late, but there are a lot of them, and you do get notified at least an hour before the supposed departure of your train, so you can, using the Bahn app,, easily find a replacement connection. Well, most of the time. Not that people without a mobile device and internet access are screwed, and the are still a considerable part of older folk for whom this is true. Yours truly, in her fiftyseventh year of life, does not have this problem and thus can navigate the perils of the public transport system while using its benefits. Which I still very much prefer to taking the care, believe me. I am a German who isn't crazy about the Autobahn.

Internationally: Back in what turned out to be the last year of the Soviet Uniion (I think? 1991?) my APs and self spent two weeks in Russiai, one in Moscow and one in Leningrad/St. Petersburg, respectively. Among the many memorable things in Moscow were a couple of subway stations which looked like mini palaces, complete with chandeliers. I dimly recall being told these hailed from Stalin's era and were meant to demonstrate how well off the people were in the worker's paradise, which sounds like him, and of course looking like mini palaces does not enhance the usefulness of a subway station, but it still was an unexpected and impressive view! Also, the APs and yours truly actually managed to get to all the sightseeing spots we wanted to visited via the Moscow Metro and armed with a guide book and a map, so all hail the public transport system in Moscow in the year 1991. That same journey also included going by train overnight form Moscow to Leningrad (as it was still called), which worked fine, and while the cabins were hardly luxurious, they were comfortable enough for such a journey.

I also remember the main railway station in Madrid which includes a palm tree garden to relax in, which was lovely. And the cable cars of Lisbon from when I was there two or so years ago; last year, there was a terrible accident featuring one of them, so I don't know whether they'll still continue to be used that way, but they certainly were a signature part of the city (and usually you stand when using them, because they're that crowded.)

The country other than my own where I used the public transport system most often would be the United Kingdom. Generally, I've found British cars to be less comfortable but far more reliable than German ones, and the one time when I did a criss cross journey through the country on my lonesome, I got pretty much anywhere by train easily. As for the London "Tube", it's responsible for some occasions with much adrenaline pumping and transpiration from when I needed to reach the airport but was stuck in the Picadilly Line unexpectedly, but so far - knock on wood - in each of these cases, I did manage to reach the airport in time after all. Oh, and the one time I had to go from Heathrow to Oxford via bus directly, it worked perfectly as well, so good on you, British busses.

Let's see, what else? Oh, right, I once had a chance to housesit a palazzo in Venice for ten days which was awesome, and while I went everywhere on foot, I did take the vaporetto now and then, which was fine, as was the train connection to Padua when I used the chance to see the Giotto frescoes there.

Currently, a video has been gaining significant traction online, especially on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting Trump’s hypocrisy. While videos like this are fairly common, especially given how often the United States president displays this side of his character, it is amusing nevertheless.

In a video shared by the page MAGA Cult Slayer on X on January 19, 2026, which, as of this writing, has thousands of likes, shares, and saves and hundreds of comments, Trump can be seen exhibiting extreme bigotry. Posted as a collection of two videos from separate timelines of Trump’s existence, the first part of the clip shows Trump making a transphobic comment during his public address in August 2025, while discussing his plans for the 2028 Olympics, saying, “The United States will not let men steal trophies from women.” Cut to the second half of the video, which, though meant in a different context than the first half suggests, shows a picture of Trump accepting the Nobel Peace Prize from María Corina Machado, who won it last year for “her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.” While the picture is still displayed in the background, the video then shows Trump answering questions related to the award, and a reporter asking him what he intends to do with “someone else’s Nobel Prize.” He says:

Reached a couple of milestones yesterday, and I'm mentally basically ready to shift back into working on my original projects. Just trying to remember where I'm at with everything. Also cool milestone alert!

Milestone alert: GYWO monthly goal for January, reached! ;)

With my pledge, I should write 12.5k words a month, and now I'll have reached it at least once this year!! It feels really good to start the year being on track. As much as Time Is A Construct, I think I should be careful not to set myself up for big editing projects in January in the future, in general.

I'm so surprised that over 5k of that was for a Spring Thunder fic. Like. I do write freely for tiny fandoms! But usually it's more like coughing out a vignette or a missing scene, or a tiny fix-it to deal with canon stress. Not a full hurt/comfort rescue mission. In the end though, I wrote it for the same reasons I wrote those shorter vignettes in the past: it feels good :D It feels right. It was fun. AND I get to reread and enjoy something tailored to my id in the future :D I was delighted with myself by the end of the first draft, hopefully that'll hold when I return to it for edits :D

Time-sensitive fics

I'll likely just let most of the unposted stuff I wrote rest for a while. Couple of exceptions I have in mind:

  • Well I do need to proofread and post my Candy Hearts assignment. That would be good to do on time XD
  • For my last 600 words to reach the milestone yesterday, I wrote something for Wind Breaker that will probably be invalidated by a new manga chapter next week. I'd like to clean that up and post it so there's a chance it can be enjoyed as-is for a few days before becoming canon divergent XD
  • Not really time-sensitive, but I want to post a couple of BNHA fics to get them out of my mind. One was written a couple of years ago for a collaborative project that never quite completed its landing and I think it's long enough. I need to free my mind of it before I forget it even exists.

Original stuff

Cursed Witch pacing check )

Soul Thief edit preps Take Two )

This was supposed to help me figure out what to do this morning, but it didn't really help in the end! Maybe I'll see if there's a fic in an editable state. I know there's a couple of finished drafts in there, but for some of those I wanted to do a canon review first... Gah!! So many fun things to do, so little time :D

~ Mad Girl's Love Song, 1953

This verse was quoted in an unrelated book I was reading; poetry only very rarely grips me as viscerally and immediately as these few lines did. I had to look up the full text online because it wasn't even included in my collected Plath edition. (It was worth looking up. Holy fuck, I love this poem!)

But then I had the collected Plath down from the bookshelf, so I figured I might as well keep reading. Here are some excerpts from a few favourites.

Soliloquy of the Solipsist )

Frog Autumn )

April 18 )

Dirge for a Joker )

I didn't read cover to cover, but one thing that stood out to me was how many more poems I liked from among the juvenilia than from her published volumes. That could be due to how they were collected - only 50, from a few hundred - but there's also a raw emotionality to these early efforts that connects with me more than some of her more sophisticated, "mature" work.

Also, Mad Girl's Love Song is still my favourite of them all. <3

21. Do you like wearing colourful socks? What do the brightest socks you own look like?

I rarely wear shoes. I own tons of flip flops. That’s what I live in. In December I wore socks three days when it was cooler and raining. But I have at least a dozen short socks in lovely pastel colors. Hubby cracks up that I wear flip flops in the winter. To each his own, right? Sometimes I wish there were three questions to answer.

Is everyone in shock with the show Heated Rivalry doing so well at AO3? The kudos and the comments are unreal. Has anyone read any of them? I have and so far they’re pretty darn good. I’m anxious to hear what others say.

Have a good Wednesday.

More pics from the garden - mostly flowers this time with everything in full bloom other than the roses, which are in between. These were taken a few days ago before solid rain set in, so what with a planned power cut 8am-6pm today for maintenance work, a quiet day today. Went for a moderate drive to get lunch out (excellent sushi) and charge my car battery, and now the power's back in time to download a bunch of fics to survive AO3 being down for way too long. I'm feeling virtuous as I made a rice cooker full of bean, veggie, chicken & chilli stew. Very tasty.

I'm still marinating in Heated Rivalry everything and it's helped with creating in other fandoms - an SGA and a due South secret Santa fic in late Dec and several SGA ones more recently for another exchange (will be unanoned soon). Gave myself for-real goddamn eyestrain from too much screen time reading and scrolling tumblr - inflamed, watering eyes, blurred vision, the whole nine yards. I'm being marginally more sensible about breaking up screen time with other activities now and that's resolved it, thank goodness. Too wet to garden, but. Anyway, garden pics follow, and here's hoping you're all doing okay! (Click through for large size)

I first really became conscious of Shimada Haruka whilst Oba Mina was in disgrace. A member of the ninth generation alongside her former classmate, Nakamura Mariko, Mori Anna, Yamauchi Suzuran, Yokoyama Yui, and, of course, Oba herself, Haruu was brought in as temporary captain of Team 4 during 2nd September 2011 through to 4th January 2012 when Oba finally made her triumphant return. This wasn't her only brush with leadership either, as in 2015, she was appointed as co-captain alongside Kitahara Rie as she was moved to Team K, a position she held for several years until it was done away with in 2017 and she announced her graduation. Haruu was always a smart girl, having no catchphrase, just a simple "I'm Team K's Shimada Haruka," and having some prior experience of shepherding wayward members in her school's tennis club. It's no surprise then that she went on to become the CEO of clerical and IT related company DCT.inc, based in Shibuya-ku... wait, looking at this, maybe I should try and get a job here?

Haruu joined AKB in 2009 as a kenkyuusei member and several months later debuted in the theatre during a revival of Team B's fourth stage, Idol no Yoake, during which she performed Itoshiki Natasha, a song that also featured on Sashihara Rino's debut single, Soredemo Suki da yo. As with Kato Rena, the only A side she appeared on was Manatsu no Sounds good!, yet that didn't stop Haruu from fast becoming popular with fans even if she wasn't able to rank in the successive general elections that followed. In 2010, however, she was moved to Team Unknown, and from that moment, the irrepressible Team 4 was born.

In 2012, having returned captaincy of her team back to Oba, she was moved to Yokoyama Team K during the fateful Tokyo Dome Team Shuffle, and from here she built her career as a Team K stalwart, appearing frequently on B sides during the years before she announced her graduation during a 2017 SHOWROOM stream. Having taken a break from the entertainment industry, Haruu has gone from strength to strength, with the establishment of DCT.inc, her marriage in 2023, and the birth of her first child in May 2024.

Since last year, I thought briefly of maybe staying in Atami for a longer period of time than just a daytrip. When I discovered that Haruu was the owner of a guesthouse in Atami, I thought very briefly about what it would be like to stay there, but I really don't have the courage for guesthouses, let alone guesthouses run by former Team 4 captains, I'd absolutely make a fool of myself.

Yet still, maybe one day...

Haruu!

Grandfamily (noun)
grandfamily [grand-fam-uh-lee, fam-lee]

noun, plural grandfamilies
1. a family in which one or more children live with and are raised by their grandparent or grandparents: Grandfamilies exist because of absent parents, and the circumstances behind that can vary greatly from one case to the next.

Origin: First recorded in 1960–65; grand ( def. ) + family ( def. )

Example Sentences
“I hear from the grandfamily caregivers that they don’t want to be a part of ‘the system,’” Keith Lowhorne, vice president of kinship with the Alabama Foster and Adoptive Parents Association, said in the report.
From Washington Post

Gentry said she hopes more grandfamily communities like hers pop up around the country so residents can provide support for one another when resources are not readily available.
From Seattle Times

More older Americans are finding a haven in the “grandfamily housing” communities sprouting nationwide.
From New York Times

There are at least 19 grandfamily housing programs with on-site services across the United States, financed by a mix of public and private funding, according to Generations United, a nonprofit focused on intergenerational collaboration.
From New York Times

Projects are underway in Washington, D.C., and Redmond, Ore., and lawmakers in the House reintroduced the Grandfamily Housing Act, which would create a national pilot program to expand grandfamily housing.

Hey, Americans! Do you live around or south of the Mason-Dixon line? If so, your weather report for later this week is shaping up to be a bit exciting. Looks like Actual Winter will be visiting places that historically have been poorly prepared for this sort of thing, i.e. TX, the South, and the mid-Atlantic.

(Also eventually the NE, but a forecast of a few feet of snow is threatening us with a good time.)

H/t to the RyanHallYall YT channel. He's a well-reputed amateur, but his report is congruent with what I'm seeing in conventional weather reports:

Winter Natterings

Weather-wise, this has been a weird, weird winter. Normally by now we have snow on the ground. Oh, we had some snow…and then it melted in a set of 40F temps, and we haven’t had any precipitation to speak of since.

Not that it’s been sunny all the time. Far from it. The fog blew in a couple of days ago. Until now, we’d been free from the freezing fog that gripped the lower valley. No longer. It started blowing in while I was preparing to go ride Marker, wisps suddenly blocking out the sun and limiting vision, then clearing out with sun while tendrils of fog rose faintly from the plowed land near the ranch before disappearing.

It looked promising to me, like maybe we wouldn’t get locked into days of rime ice and shadow.

No such luck.

That night, the fog settled in. The next day I rose to shadows and rime ice. While the fog hung a little bit above the ground in town, it hit the ground near the ranch. I couldn’t see even halfway across the horse pasture. We went from the ground thawing slightly enough to be soft over frozen soil to hard frost, and no thawing. A damp chill settles through everything, feeling colder than what the thermometer says it is. While the sun tries to break through, that doesn’t happen everywhere.

Everything slows down. The horses don’t do much running, except in small eruptions to warm up or break up the monotony. The ground’s just too hard. Unlike old Mocha, Marker doesn’t want to run very much in these conditions. I started riding him in the arena and in an open right-of-way to give him a break from the herd and the field. Because of the hard ground, we’re doing different types of work. Schooling at walk and occasional fox trot, although it’s a slow fox trot. Slow, careful, detail work. Spiraling in and out. Serpentines. Circles. But it’s a shorter period of work, avoiding concussion on his hooves. I don’t want to ride on the road in this fog, even though the visibility isn’t horrible—the fog can thicken without warning. Too much of a risk.

So we do our slow work in the arena, me riding him without a saddle today. Rime ice forms on his forelock, the tips of his ears, the hair on his legs, and the edges of my coat collar in sharp little spikes. But even though there’s a thin pad between us, to keep my pants cleaner, Marker’s body warmth radiates into my legs. A lot nicer than the saddle.

Meanwhile, the quail have decided to revisit our feeding area, though I suspect they’ve been sneaking in and out for some time now. The other day, I saw three males out there, then, later, the entire covey of about eleven or so. We think they might be a clutch that has gathered together for the winter—they’re all on the small side. No idea how often they’re coming by, but it’s a welcome sight to look out the window and see their bobbing topknots as they scratch chicken-like to unearth seed that we’ve either spread or that blew out of the feeders during windstorms.

The cold creeps into my bones and I find refuge in the heating pads. It’s damp. Not the same damp as the Willamette Valley, though—this is a sharper, edgier damp. I’m at the stage where I have the indoor base layers and the outdoor base layers. The chill gets worse at dusk, then warms back up.

A lot of people saw a truly amazing aurora last night. We didn’t. Oh, we probably could have driven out of town to a higher elevation—some of the people who did that got amazing pictures. But we just hunkered down, though I kept slipping out in hopes of seeing something.

Beyond a pinkish tinge to the fog at times, there was nuthin’.

The lack of snow means I don’t get the same vertigo I do when the fog sets in during a snowy period. It’s not as bad on horseback as it was when I was skiing the Magic Mile and had those moments when I didn’t know what was up and what was down, what was fog and what was snow. But it still has those challenging moments.

Eh, soon enough it will clear off. Maybe. Until then….

Storage room was emptied with the help of a friend on the weekend - perfect timing because today was the billing date for the rental. (Everybody should have at least one Ukrainian friend. Every Ukrainian import I've ever met, if you ask them if they have time for a favour, they're immediately, "I can be there in 20 minutes.") This is the last of the big stash to be cleared out and organized. My house is once again full of crap but I've got most of it already sorted into piles to keep, give away, throw away, or incorporate into The Stuff.

Keep: One of the things I inherited from my mother was a tall skinny china cabinet. I cleaned all the dust off and polished the glass and it's now set up on my ground floor - a little dinged up from being dragged around but a touch of paint should fix it right up. She filled it with crystal glasses and clocks shaped like shamrocks. I'll probably fill it with skulls and gargoyles. Maybe dioramas from Hieronymus Bosch. Haven't decided yet.

Give Away: A couple of big bags of sweaters and blankets to go to the drop-in centre, so good timing on that as well. A big bag of shoes that will go to the drop-in next summer because they have no storage space. Neighbours have already called dibs on a few things I posted to the local group. There is also a big box of photos, so I will pull those out for my family to go through as they are conveniently all in my house next weekend.

The Stuff: This is what I call the things where I go, "That is future me's problem" and stick it in a corner. Furniture that will either go into the (some day) finished basement or will be re-homed if it's not needed, boxes of art that's going to get re-hung after I've patched/repainted the damaged walls, boxes of planters and exterior decorations I want to go through for setting up the new deck in the spring, boxes of material and sewing supplies I'm going to dig into mmn, maybe next winter if I'm being completely honest.

The Stuff is... I'm not going to lie, The Stuff takes up a lot of room and my sister likes to pull one thing out of the pile and hold it up and go, "WHAT ARE YOU KEEPING THIS FOR" and she's not wrong entirely, but... also I have been dealing with my own hoarding tendencies for a long time and this I absolutely know, I will throw it away when I am good and fucking ready and not one minute before.

(Also, if somebody stands up and says "EXPLAIN YOURSELF" my immediate instinctual reaction is No, Fuck You. So that doesn't help her get the response she's looking for.)

***

Achievement unlock #2, no hot water this morning. Of course the corridor to get back to the tank was filled with storage room stuff, so I moved that, and then sat on the floor to read the instructions on the sticker that was conveniently located 6 inches from the very bottom of the tank. Last time I had to light a pilot I was much bendier, but also I had to unscrew a side panel and then stick a match into the space under the tank. This just required pressing a bunch of buttons in a very specific order. The technology is much improved, IMHO.

Then I realized I had an appointment in 40 minutes and there was a mad scramble to get out of the house in time and I forgot every single other thing I was going to do today.

(Side Note: And holy crap it was cold outside today! My fingers went numb after about 30 seconds.)

I think the cat is losing weight again. I've noticed his appetite has dropped off in the last couple of weeks. I checked the label on his prescription and it expired in December, so I'm hoping that he just needs a fresh batch. He has a date with the vet tomorrow and I'll be picking up a new bottle, but I'm going to bring it up with them.

Other than that, his energy level is fine and he's still playful. And he will still roll me for his treats. So hopefully this is a temporary setback.

***

I don't talk about the news much on here. It's a lot. I've been watching the news and the on-the-ground videos and following my friends and... yeah. I don't talk about it much because I don't have much to say, but I'm still paying attention.

I yell at politicians. My MP can't even be arsed to acknowledge my messages and I'm sure her staff are getting tired of me. I think one day when I have the spoons I'll go to her office, it's not far from here. Then when she calls me a peon and dismisses my opinions, she'll at least have to do it to my face.

(I mostly hate her because she originally got her seat by claiming to be an environmentalist, but she has spent her term defending every decision to to buy a pipeline and subsidize oil sand development. Because her job is more important than her principles.)

***

I've been talking to the gf a lot about retirement. She's pretty much done with her job, and ready to call it a day. Honestly I could say the same. I mean I don't actually mind the job but I think about all the things that I could be doing with my time instead. Taking classes, learning skills, getting involved in community stuff, making things. Working is such a waste of time, never more so than when one can see how much is left.

But first I have to get this house bullshit finished with. Then I can sit down and figure out when I can afford to quit working. Maybe talk to HR, even going part-time for a bit might work out financially.

***

Media stuff:
GF and I finished watching The Morning Show. I love this show so much, mostly because there are SO MANY messy, complicated, multi-layered women. Jennifer Aniston plays a character who is often completely unlikable and yet there are so many times in the story when the viewer is dragged 100% into her corner.

Last week we watched the first two episodes of Pluribus. My take was; I wouldn't want that for myself, but it would make for a much better world to live in for everybody else. I'd probably finally take the opportunity to travel a lot - it's not like any of my family or friends would miss me.

Just started reading This Is How You Lose The Time War. I'm just a couple of chapters in. What a weird and fabulous book.

I've also started reading Wheel Of Time since the series was cancelled. I'm about a quarter of the way through Book 2. Honestly I probably wouldn't have stuck with the series on the strength of Book 1 alone, but already I think I like Book 2 better.

This would get my strung up by the bookcloaks but I can really see why the series changed so much. There is a lot of material in the book that is interesting to read, but it would get in the way of telling the story in a visual format. (And also the series would be 400 seasons long and feature lots of riding through countryside while feeling creepy. So. Yeah.)

I made a third try for the Tennesee Warbler at Booker T Anderson, but still no joy. I briefly had hope but it was an Orange-crowned, similar enough to get me excited. Oh, well. The trees were full of Yellow-rumped Warblers and I also found two Townsend's that were very cooperative, ignoring me as they flitted around it the very nearby willows. Again there was a Purple Finch singing, and I found an American Goldfinch eating catkins with a Lesser. So I had an enjoyable hour and a half even without the star bird. The list: )

From there I crossed the freeway, parked at Richmond Marina, and walked around the north side of the harbor to get the other side of Winter. The first bird I saw was a Spotted Sandpiper.:) I saw small Grebes of all three species, quite a few Bufflehead, some Scaup, and a Surf Scoter or two, but no other ducks. Another list: )

The biggest surprise was hearing no Yellow-rumped Warblers!

1. Got my hair cut this morning. Carla wanted to get hers trimmed before her trip (she's going to Wisconsin for a week tomorrow for her aunt's 80th birthday) so it was the both of us and we decided to pop over to Universal Studios for lunch afterwards. The crowds were so low! If we'd stayed to go on any rides, almost everything was like 20 minutes or less, even the massively popular ones. As it was, we just had a nice lunch, spotted some characters, and came home.

2. Because of the haircut appointment, which was awkwardly timed for late morning, I just made today a WFH day. Did some stuff in the morning before we went, and then had a meeting later in the afternoon. I didn't really have a whole lot on the agenda for today anyway, so it worked out well.

3. Shake Shack is apparently having a Korean inspired menu right now, so we got the burgers with Korean BBQ sauce. They were so good! There's also a chicken sandwich and fries with kimchi powder and dipping sauce, and even a caramel gochujang shake, so if they've still got this stuff on the menu when Carla gets back from her trip, we're planning to try some of those as well. Actually now that I think of it, there's one near work, so I might just go over there for lunch one day...

4. Warming bed + stretching = best combo.

For someone like me, who loves movies about music, I have been very excited about Judd Apatow and Glen Powell’s new comedy. The film is set to focus on a country star who has fallen from grace. And now the rest of the cast is shaping up to be exciting!

Co-written by Powell and Apatow, the Trainwreck director is set to direct and produce with Powell starring and producing with his production company, Barnstorm. But now the cast is filling out with fan favorites! It was announced this week that both Cristin Milioti and Madelyn Cline will join Powell in the cast.

Got some archiving done! I'm still a couple of weeks behind but, like, have you seen the last couple of weeks?

I'm trying to get better at picking at things when I have a few spare minutes, instead of feeling like I need a block of time to code/write/whatever.

The Lemonade Cafe's twenty-third (whut?!) anniversary is somewhere in the next couple of weeks. Looking back, it's traditionally been celebrated between the 30th of January and the 7th of February, so it's very much an anniversary week and not a firm date. This is basically because the original site was coded for a class project for a one-credit web-dev class I took my last semester of university. Once the class was over and the site (a fairly general KH site, tbh) graded, I promptly swapped it over to hosting the fanfiction I'd been writing for an entire month at that point.

I don't actually have any anniversary plans so um, help me make some?

Current gunpla/plamo kit is [redacted] for a contest so mostly all I can yell about is glitter and rhinestones, lol.

Writing romance in LLG

The hazard, I'm learning, of writing romance in LLG is that for any scene to feel genuine, I have to put some of myself in it. Not my experiences (I've not engaged in much romance), but what I like.

So, you get Ostric who blushes and is easy to fluster (and who is utterly willing to tease back). Elian who is always on your side and that shared quiet of knowing one another (complicated by the realization that you don't know them as well as you thought and have you been taking them for granted? and if this bothers you, then wanting to know them more, to rebuild that sense of shared world of two). Nothia who pushes and challenges, but never dominates, who trusts you to do well and relies on you. Kian who protected you in the past and needs your support and protection now. Frey who connects intellectually as you solve a mystery together (and who is so, so bad at taking care of himself). Luvia who is brilliant, but guarded and so the story is about earning her trust, about being one of the very small number she trusts.

Like.... my ROs are so revealing.

And, if I think about it too much, writing the romances is almost uncomfortable because they're so revealing. I am writing shades of what I find appealing. If someone wants a romance where they're spoiled/etc, they're a bit out of luck in this particular story.

I saw a post on tumblr that talked about how many sex scenes in romantasy/etc are mediocre and part of me wonders if that it is due to writers being reluctant to basically undress on the page and reveal what makes them tick.

Anyone who pays attention is going to see more of me than I really find comfortable, but anything less feels false on the page.

I started off the day with another epic feat of shoveling. Only a few more inches of snow fell overnight, but the plow came by and barricaded my driveway with thick slabs of condensed snow. Digging that out was the hard part. The Sparrowhawk said "You're a wonder," when I came inside red-cheeked and puffing. I'm happy to accept the accolade. However, it will probably snow some more early tomorrow, so my good works will be wiped out, as is so often the case in other areas.

Then we had our weekly Zoom with Deb and the Prussian, and learned to our sorrow that another person we knew from the old days had been involved in a very bad crash over Christmas and was still in the ICU. I've had a couple of unexpected pleasures recently, as well as unexpected sorrows, however. The first was a message from the past, in the form of a text from the Former Student. He has reappeared on the radar, in response, I guess, to a sympathetic note on the Christmas card we sent him. He wants to have lunch with me next week, after a gap of several years! I'm afraid it will be mostly "sad stories of the death of kings," since we have both had deaths in the family and that's probably what he wants to talk about. I'll have to screw my courage to the sticking point.

No matter where; of comfort no man speak:
Let’s talk of graves, of worms, and epitaphs;
Make dust our paper and with rainy eyes
Write sorrow on the bosom of the earth,
Let’s choose executors and talk of wills:
And yet not so, for what can we bequeath
Save our deposed bodies to the ground?

At least it won't be until after my birthday. The other surprise was a phone call from my brother's older child to wish me a happy birthday! That was a kindly thought.

Wow, I only made one post last year? I'm here every day, reading, so I keep up with anyone still posting here.

I didn't put up the Yuletide polls this year. Just didn't have the oomph. It's been an oomph-sapping kind of year or so, hasn't it? (Fuck me -- just looked it up, and it's literally the one-year anniversary of that shitbag's inaguration.)

ANYWAY. Fun stuff. Things I have posted since...a while ago.

Click for a larger, sharper image

...here is tonight's rather belated photo. This is the Real Ale Tavern, a rather boringly named pub in Bewdley. And yes, it is known as the Rat sometimes! The building was once Barclays Bank – I can remember it being that – but it's been a pub for some years now. To the left you can just see part of the HealthPoint Pharmacy; to the right you can just see the side road that leads to the town centre car parks.

The conference was interesting, if maybe 1 panel too long (it ended at 4:55 pm, but the last panel was...not great, imo), though the lunch options were, to me, appalling. (Many people ate and enjoyed the sandwiches but there was not one that I would eat. I made do with salad, chips, and cookies.) My boss and I both felt validated by some things being mentioned that we already do and some that we are planning to do (if the new board chair approves), so that part was good too.

It was hard to get up (it was hard to sleep, knowing I had to get up 90 minutes earlier than usual), but I did it. I also saw two fun signs on the way: "Lube Entrance" and "You can ship anything." As [personal profile] devildoll said when I told her, I'll take AO3 tags for $200, Alex. *g*

Now I'm going to try to stay awake for another hour and then go to bed because I am le tired.

I found this intriguing. YouTuber KnittingCultLady, who is an Air Force veteran and author about two books on military culture from the standpoint of cults(!), put out this rather frustrated video clarifying how members of the military respond to illegal orders. The tl;dr is they will follow orders of ambiguous legality, and refuse to follow orders of obvious illegality, and what is obviously illegal may not be what civilians think.

2026 Jan 18: KnittingCultLady on YT: Some Examples of Recent Malicious Compliance from the Military, ALSO Listen Carefully To My Words:

She doesn't put it this way, but it sounds from what she says that what makes something obviously illegal is that it resulted in a courtmartial or other nigh-universal condemnation when tried previously. Orders that are for doing things that are war crimes by the letter of the law but which did not result in prosecution or other negative consequences for the perpetrators when done in the past do not trigger the sense that they are illegal, e.g. if it was okay for Bush to seize Noriega, then clearly it must be legal for Trump to seize Maduro.

Universal Studios has short hours during the off season, making it inconvenient to go for dinner on weeknights, but today we had an opportunity to go for lunch since we were sort of partway there.

The park wasn't crowded at all, but all the good parking was taken, so we had to park at the ET parking structure, which is at the far end of CityWalk, but at least that meant we got a nice walk to and from the park as well as inside.

woman shares online dress order (l) dress package arrives (r)

Some are calling it a fashion faux pas, while others name it a full bridal coup. A Floridian mom videos her daughter unboxing a dress they ordered online to attend a wedding. Except, when the tiny box explodes into a floor-length, beaded, feathered mermaid gown, the internet collectively squints. The question now is: is she attending the wedding… or auditioning to replace the bride? TikTok viewers have taken it upon themselves to open the floor for a debate in the comments section.

Is it White?

Nothing gets a crowd of viewers like a good wedding attire debate. Paula’s (@paula_robert_fl) clip is direct proof. Her two-minute TikTok has attracted 840,000 views and more than 2,000 comments. She begins the clip by showing her daughter with a small box.
