It’s been a while since we’d measured Eaglet’s height, so we were startled to realize they’re now 4'6" (137cm). Somehow, being a full four and a half feet makes them seem more like an actual Big Kid than their turning 10.

Big Kid is mostly a size thing!

Several studies out there about how larger children get functionally shorter childhoods, because everyone you interact with thinks you're eight when you're five, sort of thing.

Heh. Thanks to a graphing data exercise done at school, we know Eaglet is middle of the pack in their class.

Reason insisted a few years ago that she was almost a big kid. Now she insists she's definitely not a big kid yet because she's learned a bit more about the world and what it requires.

I feel bad for her classmate, who hit 5'7 in fifth grade and has never been allowed to settle into medium-kidness (not only because of height; she was also tasked young with watching a younger sib, between neglectful adults, which hasn't been good for either kid--but as of fifth grade, everyone else also failed to treat this classmate like a kid, sigh).

Can't remember what height I was at 10 but I've always been under average which ended up having certain advantages when I had to make a certain change as I ended up as only 5'6".

Eaglet is not especially attached to the label of Big Kid. Though next year, they'll be at the top of the school, 5th grade, which they're ambivalent about. (They are not looking forward to the structure of middle school, with moving classes for everything -- nor to loosing being taught in Mandarin half the day.)

5'7" is ... big. Yikes.

Whereas I was always one of the tallest kids in class. (This had certain advantages: one year of uni, I lived with 2 roommates both over a foot shorter, and all but the lowest kitchen cabinets were mine all mine.)

I do indeed come across as fairly tall (6'4") in person -- taller than I do online.
