Happy Lunar New Year to all who celebrate — 新年好!

A bit of kvelling: our Chinese Cultural Center has, as for the past few years, posted a New Years video of performances of its various artistic groups, and Eaglet’s lion dance troupe (cued to the start) is included. They are in the first group of three, which are the pre-teen performers, as the head of the red-green-yellow lion on the right.

It’s worth watching the teens as well — a total of about 8 minutes — and the rest of the video. The mando-pop dancers are a hoot.

That's so cool! They are an excellent half a lion.

They were not entirely comfortable with that performance -- they very much prefer being the back half (heads are "too heavy") but their usual partner was unavailable as his sister, the usual partner of Eaglet's back here, was recovering from Covid. I think a little more practice with the routine could have helped their comfort.

I still remember a lion dance years ago that had to be called off because the back half of the yellow lion got stuck in traffic.

I completely and utterly believe this happened. We once had one lion, a pair of siblings, miss a performance because their parents couldn't find a parking spot.

Obviously Eaglet needs to get more comfortable with the lion head work by wearing it around the house, right?

This is cute, but also they do a great dance. They're already very expressive!

Eaglet has repeatedly declined to use a head around the house, either with a real head or a practice one made from a cardboard box. I think doing so involves blending parts of their identity that they otherwise keep segregated in their mind. Or possibly they just feel awkward about it.
