I was raised with the former sense, unequivocally. It is not surprising, but disturbing to me to think that for other people it is contingent on hierarchy.

I've been aware of the difference for a long time, though not phrased in quite this clear a way, and have been struggling with how to reconcile those who default to hierarchic worldviews to other ways of thinking.
