In the personal news department, I came back from vacation (a working one: helping my parents move) to learn my employer is shuttering this satellite office and my position is one of those being cut along the way. Which means job hunting time again. The gig's up at the end of next month, so it's not a desperation search yet, but still.

(Any tips as to tech writing jobs, preferably in Arizona or working remote, are appreciated. I also freelance as a copyeditor, proofreader, and ebook formatter, and referrals to potential gigs greatly appreciated. But mostly I'm posting this in a bid for sympathy.)

FWIW, travel with a four-year-old is so much easier than even three. I can now comprehend the trip around the world my family took when I was that age. Also: TBD still adores Grandpa.

No tips, alas, though I'll keep an ear open, but definitely sympathy! Ugh, that sucks, and I hope the job hunting goes well and is (happily) over swiftly.

Ah, sorry to hear of the office closure and consequent cuts. Will pass along anything remote+writing if I hear of any. (I went into QE instead of returning to writing because there isn't much writing left around here, though.)

A transition like that is not out of line -- I know other writers locally who have done that.

"Not out of line" as in something you'd consider?
I thought about program management, too (not the same as product management), and concluded that (in my case particularly) I'd need more domain knowledge/refresher before it'd make sense. It's probably best done locally, anyway.

One of the unhealthy things about technical jobs of any kind in my nearest metro is that I rarely hear about jobs that aren't in the SF/SiliValley/NY/Austin/Boston+Camb/Seattle cluster. Artificial tier, more like. It's as though They don't want people to remember that it's often much nicer to live in other places.

Something I'd consider, as needed. (Program management is not personally interesting to me, though -- I admire those who can do it well, but doubt I could myself.)
