Those illustrations range from the badass (Nazgul crows) to the really rather creepy (Dickensian Butterbur) to just plain wtf. Wow, thank you for that link.

They are, indeed, all over the place. I gather from comments by those who know the relevant art history, that stylistically they are imitating multiple eras.

I would love to have grown up with them.
