How Dante Gabriel Rossetti came to be obsessed with wombats. Without yet clicking on the link, I have to say the thought of Dante Gabriel Rossetti being obsessed with wombats makes me laugh.

Favourite phrase of the week so far: '...either Rossetti’s épergne was enormous, or the wombat was dramatically small.'

I've seen descriptions of Rossetti's household that mention his épergne's generous size, but it's possible they were extrapolating from the wombat rather than independent knowledge.

It was more likely his groundhog that slept in the épergne. I find that just barely plausible, and most people would not be able to tell them apart at a glance by candlelight.

I haven't heard that speculation before. Given the notoriety of the wombat -- I mean, it shows up in almost every potted bio of him more than a paragraph long -- I'm a little dubious.

Look at the size difference, man! A groundhog would fit on the table; a wombat really would not. If you had never seen one or the other, and had heard that there was one (whether or not it was still around), you'd assume the animal in the épergne was a wombat, very reasonably. They do look a fair bit alike, apart from size, those brindly-brown burrowing colonial animals.



Wait... Are we actually having this conversation? About what animal the Rossettis had sleeping in their épergne? Are we drunk? Or asleep?
