I'm sure that's really a bayonet. Though why a dispatch courier (I assume that's why he's wearing a post-horn) would wield one of those in his nightshirt is, of course, another question.

Could be couriers were armed (not unlikely IMO). His tolerant "OK, get the photo over with" expression hints that this is a hazing (the kitten on his head points to some regimental hi-jinks connection). Also, that kitty has done this before.
One could look for German units with cat mascots/emblems.
