Visual linkspam day:

The Mississippi River visualized as a subway map (larger), with tributaries as lines and cities as stations. Kinda cool, actually.

The Big Picture documents an expedition to the edge of the lava lake in Nyiragongo Crater: "Approaching 282 million cubic feet of lava requires extensive protections." Um, yes. Yes it does.

Frank Hurley's color photographs (via) from Shackleton's 1915 Endurance expedition. I've seen many of these before in b&w, but never realized there were color versions.

A NASA solar observator captures a massive solar flare in action. The size is staggering, yes, but I'm more startled at how much material you can see falling back to the surface of the sun.

Mr. Hammer, you are a source of COMPLETE INTERNET WIN today. I love-love-love the Nyirangongo photos and story. My icon is of Nyirangongo; I drew on it for my Pen Pal story.

And the Mississippi as a subway map--my older son is going to LOVE that.

Of course, there is also a subway map of Middle Earth (I bought a poster for Steve for his birthday).
