The problem with reading all the way through a general anthology of Chinese poetry is that eventually you have to cross the Ming dynasty. Without a camel.
Close. The winner of the very first (1983) Bulwer-Lytton contest was:
The camel died quite suddenly on the second day, and Selena fretted sulkily and, buffing her already impeccable nails—not for the first time since the journey began—pondered snidely if this would dissolve into a vignette of minor inconveniences like all the other holidays spent with Basil.
But that's not quite the quote you gave. "The Last Camel Died at Noon" is actually the title of an Elizabeth Peters novel, which Wikipedia helpfully informs me comes from the first sentence of The Key to Rebecca by Ken Follet.
I've read Elizabeth Peters series. So much fun, and lots of Egyptian archaeology, too!
I thought that EP the quote from Bulwer-Lytton or the guy who wrote the Tarzan series (Edgar Rice Burroughs!), but I don't have the actual book handy to look it up. If it's at my library, I'll check later.
It certainly seems like it could be a Bulwer-Lytton quote, and that someone in the B-L contest used it... So, now I've curious.
I think you must be really missing someone at this point... Hang in there!
