A few things that make me happy:
- Icelandic/Danish folksingers celebrating the sun comming back for summer.
- Going through our complete Iceland trip pictures.
- A gallery of pocket sundials.
- Dark skies over Racetrack Playa.
- That there is an ICD-9-CM code for being injured while on a spacecraft.
- Yotsuba in a happi. (read right-to-left)
- Beaker and the Swedish Chef singing the "Habanera" from Carmen.

Date: 22 July 2008 07:19 pm (UTC)Thanks for pointing us in the direction of Krauka (http://www.krauka.dk/) and the various muppet renditions of classical music (I kept clicking after watching Beaker and the Swedish Chef). 8)
The pocket sundials are really, really cool & the fact that at least three of the set were identified as being shepherds' sundials completely turns my uninformed image (of the world of shepherds as being uninterested in time, or at least time in human-centric terms, rather than sun & season) on its head.

I have a strong suspicion that the "Habanera" video and the other videos directly linked from that page are recent and official YouTube creations by the Jim Henson Company.

And I loved this (http://cache.wists.com/thumbnails/e/5f/e5fc60f7bb659d59b644bf263675f7bc-orig) pocket sundial best.

Date: 23 July 2008 12:11 am (UTC)That is, indeed, a stunning pocket-dial. When we last visited Basel, in one of the historical museums, we stumbled across a long gallery of just clocks, with case after case in the middle of pocket watches of all manner of ornate carapaces. Including one almost devoted to pocket sundials. We've been fascinated by them ever sense. The gift shop had a reproduction of one, actually, but it was a) a bit steep on the Francs for us and b) the pegs for adjusting your gnomen by latitude were all marked with northern European cities and didn't go as far south as Arizona.
