To my surprise, cantos of Purgatory do not alternate with Fruits Basket as well as Inferno -- not even after volume 11. I'd been thinking of Fruits Basket as similarly tripartite: I. Tohru slowly meets all the zodiac and learns how bad things are, culminating in her resolution to break the curse. II. Her efforts at that, culminating with the breaking. III. Clean-up and healing. Now it looks like part II is still Hell -- which I suppose makes sense, as the zodiac is still cursed; not to mention, that cleanup includes the recognition of just how many characters are in severe PDST, and healing the scars could correspond to the purging of sins. Or maybe the analogy simply doesn't hold.

It doesn't help that I've stuck with the Cary translation, because his geography is even more muddled than his action scenes. I've had to resort to Sayers's notes to work out the Mountain's layout. And yet, the editor's pedantic Victorian glosses are too delicious to give up. Especially since his annotations make it clear just how much more indebted Dante is to Ovid than Virgil -- something no one's brought out to me before. There's an allusion to Metamorphoses something like every other canto of Inferno. Ah well.

So far, the Ninja Replacement Score is 0 -- Virgil is, at least in his ability to deal with demons, already a ninja. I withhold judgment of Dante for the moment.

"Virgil is a ninja" -- that makes my head hurt.

ETA: P.S. Why hadn't anyone pointed out to me that the Victorian Romance Emma anime has been licensed, with the first season coming out subbed-only in June?
