Just now, a falcon who's been hanging around landed on the streetlamp outside my cubie window, holding a lump in one claw. It looked around, hopped ungainly, looked some more. Bent head, then glanced about again, got ready to eat ...

... and a prairie hawk landed beside it, grabbed the lump, and chased the falcon off. It didn't bother checking, but tore in immediately. Down and feathers floated away for several minutes. Then came the preening, and looking around. The waiting. And -- there, it just flew off.

Possibly because there's a Harris hawk, even larger than it, hopping around the nearby pine tree.

There's always a bigger, um, bird.

How are you liking the Mitcheson?

Is this the same Naomi Mitcheson who wrote Sci Fi?

There is a cam site that has been focused on the life cycle of a pair of Peregrine falcons. Right this very minute one of the three babies is considering its first flight. Papa is watching very closely. (He has slightly lighter chest feathers than mama. (Jose and Clara)

The other two are slightly younger and are still picking the infant feathers out. I bet they itch. A short while ago one of them was sleeping. Looked quite dead with its head to one side. Then (to my relief) it woke up.

I thought the name sounded familiar. I have two of her novels somewhere around here: The Conquered (of course; it's the one about Gaul), and The Corn King and the Spring Queen.

HA! Of course you get the Call of the Wild episode out of your window. From the Sam Hughes convalescent center I only get horny pigeons. They are not very much fun to watch at all.
