You stopped and pointed and you said, "That's a crocus,"
And I said, "What's a crocus?" and you said, "It's a flower,"
I tried to remember, but I said, "What's a flower?"
You said, "I still love you."

And where does magic come from? I think magic's in the learning,
'Cause now when Christians sit with Pagans only pumpkin pies are burning.

              — The Christians and the Pagans

Where's the pain, it's only rain,
It's only slowing down a work day,
Only singing happy birthday
To a crowd, very loud.

              — Playing to the Firmament

I have met the riot grrls who print their zines,
They write the word, they raise a thought.
They say who they are, they try what they're not.

She sits on her hair, and she's tall as my dad,
And she tie-dyed my shirt, and she pierced her own ear,
And it's peace, man, cool, yeah, the babysitter's here.

And it's embarrassed, but it's lusting after a SUNY student with mousy brown hair
Who is taking out the compost, making coffee in long underwear.

Links to YouSendIt while they last, by way of hoping you'll by the albums. At her best, Williams writes on the quirky side of folk-singer-songwriter earnestness. Although I usually claim The Green World is my favorite album, there's more here from Mortal City. Bonus track by Roth d'Lux:

And like my coffee, love smells better than it tastes.

eta: I forgot to include a shout out to [livejournal.com profile] lucy_anne, who introduced us to Dar with "The Christians and the Pagans" and "The Ballad of Mary Magdalene" on Christmas mix tapes.

Hey! You forgot

"I'm so glad that you finally made it here
With the things you know now that only time could tell
Looking back, seeing far, landing right where we are
And oh, you're aging, oh, and I am aging,
oh, aren't we aging well?"

I used to play her cover of "Better days" over and over and over again, like a blessing.

I owe her doubly because last time she was on tour, her opening act was "Girlyman", who are mighty close-harmony singer-songwriters in their own right.

And "Another Mystery"!

I think "The Green Day" is my favorite still. But the latest is very very good. I love the opening cut.

And "Mortal City", with the sounds of a torrential downpour and the glow of the headlights surrounding you as you slowly make your way home on the Grand Central Parkway, is very much like church.

Just saying.

The Green World never clicked with me. Not sure why.
