I was going to continue International Honor Your Influences Week with Howard Pyle (as the author of Pepper & Salt and The Wonder Clock), but my observances were cut off by having my computer stolen. In its place, I offer some short shameful confessions:

I've written my first fanfic, as a sestina, of a novel my wife hasn't finished writing.

Chobits is rilly addictive, despite CLAMP's blatant manipulation and long flowing hair fetish.

I'm intimidated enough by the story I'm working on now that I'm afraid of psyching myself into writing it badly.*

All my old email (and address book) was lost through bad backups.

ETA: Not only is there 17th century tentacle porn, there's 17th century poetry about wearing underwear on one's head. (not a confession)

* ETA2: Since confessing this, today something unexpected happened and suddenly I'm improvising story instead of setting things up. It opens the scope out even more, but I'm feeling a lot better about it now. When in doubt, steal from Aristophanes.

More seriously, many sympathies. Losing one's computer to theft is even worse than having your hard drive die suddenly.

We wuz burgled a week ago -- both our laptops were taken but nothing else. Everything, fortunately, backed up except the email of shame. We've almost gotten our new computers up to speed with installations, except I can't get Thunderbird to send mail.

The thing about sestinas, is they're an excellent vehicle for stories. If you have a narrative of just the right length that's obessive about something, like a repeated image or theme or person.

The ending of Chobits made me go "Huh?" In the "did that make sense?" rather than "thoughtful" way.

Am up to chapter almost 80 in Bleach (end of volume 9 -- we've met the one-armed woman). Tell me, does the title ever get explained?

I do not recall the title ever getting explained, but it sure sounds cool. By the way, you are now about one volume away from the point where the stuff that drove me nuts began to drive me nuts. I do like the one-armed woman, though I never warmed to her annoying brother.

The brother seems to exist to be a punk/foil. It's possible to rise beyond that, but it somehow wouldn't surprise me, given what I've seen, if he didn't.

So far, Rukia has been almost interesting in captivity. I take it she gets more passive/mired in depression as her execution nears?

I like the one-armed woman, but her design is bugging me -- those breasts are acting like balloons. Unlike Orihime's, which have definite weight -- or for that matter Yumi's in Chobits -- if perhaps not as much they would in real life.
