larryhammer: drawing of a wildhaired figure dancing, label: "La!" (La!)
Yanno, I really ought to get a Monkey King icon.

I was going to talk about something else, but instead, a pause in the middle of the day to admire a sentence (from Journey to the West chapter 15) by Wu Chen'en and/or a later Taoist redactor, translated by W.J.F. Jenner:

The next two months' journey was peaceful, and they only met Luoluos, Huihuis, wolves, monsters, tigers, and leopards.

That, my friends, is a sentence created by a storyteller who knows what he's doing, and doing several things at once with it. Possibly the most important of which is to frame this narrative as one unconcerned with piddly dangers such as tigers and monsters -- this is an big journey, so pay attention (and put another coin in the hat)! The next most important is, of course, to make you laugh.

And no, we never do find out about those Luoluos and Huihuis.
