The Huichol people, or as they call themselves, the Wixárika, are indigenous to the mountains north of Zapopan and Guadalajara, in the area where the states of Jalisco, Nayarit, Zacatecas, and Durango meet. Their religion is noted for the ritual usage of the hallucinogenic peyote cactus, which they consider one of their sacred deities.

Although they are not the only people to use it, their usage is considered especially reflective of pre-Colombian traditions. Ancestral spirits are said to be contacted utilizing the peyote. They also hold annual pilgrimages to collect peyote for year-round usage.

Another method in which the Huichol's psychedelic traditions are unique is their reflection in art. Divine, brightly colored yarn and bead art aims to capture the visions seen through the peyote rituals. Traditionally, yarn art would be used as offerings to their gods.

However, as many Huichol have migrated to cities, they have also begun producing art in new iterations for commercial sale and as a general means of creative expression. As such, Huichol art is today a common sight at tourist hotspots across Mexico. The Museo De Arte Huichol Wixárika at Zapopan Basilica is dedicated to showcasing a wide variety of the Huichol's unique art.

The Super Bowl for cinema lovers is right around the corner, and we finally know which teams are going to play! (I don’t like sports.) Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another was almost a given, snatching up thirteen noms in total. However, there was one surprise title to take home the most nominations and dethrone a few titleholders for most Oscar noms in a single year.

Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, a vampire period piece set in the South, took the crown with 16 nominations. That’s 2 more than Titanic, All About Eve, and La La Land, all of which have 14 nominations. Imagine usurping James Cameron. I would never shut up about it.

Trump says you can't run a country while playing golf

During a sprawling self-congratulatory recap of his first year in his second term on Jan. 20, Donald Trump proudly listed what he described as major accomplishments. Among them was an executive order forcing federal employees to return to in-person work or be fired. Oh, and definitely don’t play golf.

Trump wanted everyone back in the office. No excuses, no flexibility, and no working from home “on your bed,” as he put it. Remote work, he said, was a scam. Workers were lounging at home, sneaking off to ball fields, or, his favorite accusation, playing golf. “You can’t run a country or a company that way,” Trump declared.

So long, French President Emmanuel Macron had been trying to maintain peace with the United States and Donald Trump, but it seems like he has lost his patience now. I mean, why wouldn’t he? Trump has been repeatedly trying to seek France’s compliance in respect to the country becoming a part of his ambitious “Board of Peace” and in other aspects, and when Macron refused to obey Trump simply threatened him with action. Therefore, Macron is no longer obligated to be nice to Trump unless he makes reparations.

Standing on the stage at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday, Emmanuel Macron seemingly sent out a strong message to the United States and Donald Trump, without even mentioning any of them. Talking about the need to build a stronger Europe and fostering “stability” in its economy and other aspects, Macron highlighted the key features that make the continent stand out from the rest, saying:

 faux antifa regiment badge
Your laser-eye loon art for the day is a faux Antifa Regimental Badge for the Northern Defenders, Loon Liberator Brigade.(warning: this may be AI generated. I never saw an artist attribution.)

It is such a shame that antifa is actually just a bunch of collective action groups because I would sign up for this brigade just for the gear!  (Well, and the paycheck if that were real.)

So, yesterday in the Defendre le Nord regiment, I did a bunch of stuff that felt a little bit like nothing, but which is probably 100% mission critical. I have a friend who is acting as a drop-off point for folks who are donating things from out of state and I went over to their house yesterday to help them open packages, sort, and get stuff ready for delivery. Then, we drove together over to their contact's house and unloaded everything for distribution.

As we unloaded the last box, I asked the contact if there was specific immigrant owned/operated restaurant nearby that they knew was struggling and needed a couple of customers. Having gotten that info, we drove over and had lunch.

I should explain to folks from out of town what it is like to go into a Mexican restaurant right now. You don't just walk in. There's someone standing guard inside over a locked door, they unlock it long enough for you to slip in, and then they lock it up tight again. Somewhere on the door is posted a 4th amendment statement that says something to the effect that this business does not give permission for any search and seizure operations, including but not limited to the seizing of persons.

The atmosphere was a bit grim, but the food was amazing and I double-tipped the folks working there because holy shit none of this should be happening.  They fucking kidnapped another child, y'all. None of this is right? But, that's fucking cruel beyond measure. (Not that that's news to them. They have no problem roughing up grandfathers either.)

I had hoped to join my singers again last night, but they have a tendency to gather exactly when I am making or eating dinner, so tonight I will have to try again. I just saw on Facebook that my mutual aid group, the Food Communists, are in desperate need for hands, so after I drop Mason off at his haircut (his partner is coming to town tomorrow!) I'm headed over there to help out for a couple of hours.

K. Also have to clean the house ocassionally, so I am off. Yesterday's dinner was knuefle soup, today's lunch: egg salad on an everything bun with cottage cheese!  Fueling the revolution one meal at time!

Stay strong!

P.S. Vance is visiting us today, apparently. Wish us luck. They'll probably try to plant some aggitators to get violent.

MAD Magazine has been something of a cultural institution ever since it first launched in 1952. After decades of satirizing an ever-changing world, the periodical is setting its sights on the DC Universe… and everything around it already looks perfect.

This week, DC announced MAD About DC, a 64-page one-shot that will be released on Wednesday, April 1st. (Because of course it will.) The publisher, which has been handling MAD‘s distribution since 2018, will be the subject of the entire issue, with a roster of writers and artists setting out to parody, skewer, and gleefully dismantle the DC Universe.

a group of people walking in a line

Masters of the Universe finally has a trailer, and the new movie looks like a colorful throwback adventure. Travis Knight is back after his delightful run with the Transformers franchise to take on another 80’s staple.

Masters of the Universe’s first look sees Nicholas Galitzine taking on the role of Adam Glenn. Prince Adam dipped out of Eternia as a boy in this incarnation of the character. He’s been hanging out on Earth, and apparently subjecting himself to corporate drudgery. But, that all changes for this dude when he’s called back to Eternia to grab the Sword of Grayskull and become He-Man.

I’ve been enjoying Dorothy Lathrop’s books so much that I checked the university catalog to see if they had any other books by her, and discovered that she illustrated a book of poems by Sara Teasdale! Teasdale has been one of my favorites since we read “There Will Come Soft Rains” in high school, so of course I had to give it a go.

I’m working my way through the book slowly, a poem a night. I ought to save this one till next October, but I haven’t the patience, so here it is.

Late October
By Sara Teasdale

I found ten kinds of wild flower growing
On a steely day that looked like snowing:
Queen Anne’s lace, and blue heal-all,
A buttercup, straggling, grown too tall,
A rusty aster, a chicory flower–
Ten I found in half an hour.
The air was blurred with dry leaves flying,
Gold and scarlet, gaily dying.
A squirrel ran off with a nut in his mouth,
And always, always, flying south,
Twittering, the birds went by,
Flickering sharp against the sky,
Some in great bows, some in wedges,
Some in bands with wavering edges;
Flocks and flocks were flying over
With the north wind for their drover.
“Flowers,” I said, “you’d better go,
Surely it’s coming on for snow,”–
They did not heed me, nor heed the birds,
Twittering thin, far-fallen words–
The others through of to-morrow, but they
Only remembered yesterday.

Giffen plot and breakdowns, DeMatteis script, Hughes pencils.

“Club JLI” (#34) has a real “1970s-1980s movie comedy” vibe. Ex-millionaires Blue Beetle and Booster Gold are still broke and anxious for a new side hustle. Their repo gigs have been getting too depressing, and Booster’s old merchandising and licensing deals don’t bring in much bacon. But they are members of the Justice League International, the highest-profile super-team on the planet! That’s got to be monetizable somehow, right?

Sure it is! And wait until you hear the plan for their new business venture!

What could go wrong? )

Caved in. Oops.

  • Can already tell it's gonna be one of Those (TM): exoticism and the racism edition.

  • I'll say it, the intros that go "Actor So-and-So is Character Such-and-Such" and then there's a little scene of the character are awesome.

  • The Grand Vampire actor is Count Merlin of The Charlatan! Not really.

  • No idea what Jacques (René Cresté) shtick is, but Placide is very Passepartout.

  • Of course, the Vietnamese woman is too primitive and needs good ol' western reeducation! Bah! "It was of its time" my arse, we never left the Dark Ages, our eyes have just grown accustomed to the darkness.

  • Placide and Rosette (his fiancé) are wild! Great match, they're ride or die for one another.

  • I know it's because they're both played by white actors (and asian women are often stereotyped into being demure and therefore "perfect wife material") but I'm impressed that Jacques and Tih Minh are an item.

  • The soundtrack is pretty good, even when it goes all musique concréte (think Delia Derbyshire). Usually it's out-of-place, but not here. Feuillade's serials are wild.

  • I wrote "Severe lack of Musidora" and yeah. Where are you, darling, we miss you.

  • The whole sequence of Rih Minh being kidnapped + the aftermath were very well shot.

  • Dolores (who works for the baddies, a doctor and an Indian guy, because of course 🙄) is a mind reader?? And can compell people to do whatever she wants?? I don't think she's into it tbh

  • I also wrote "René Cresté fine as hell". He isn't that much in the ep, and his character at the mo is a nothing-burger, but yes.

  • Pretty sure Venenos (Les Vampires) mucked aeound in this lab.

  • There was a guy in the beginning called Stone that was found with no memory and no ability to speak and the baddies were using him??

  • So Jacques is brooding, and it's all very reminiscent of Jud— what the hell ghostly figures on the beach?? Is this The Seventh Seal??

  • Blackmail! Another very well done sequence. That zoom on the date. The acting. And the photo is gone!

  • So, Jacques is one of those white guys who go places and take stuff. Granted, what he got was a copy of a book with a note that may be useful if Europe goes to war (WW1 reference), but still. The baddies crave it for their unknown nefarious deeds.

  • Placide, no! That's an historical artifact!

  • Placide, no! I know Kistna (the evil Indian guy) is evil, but no need to basically call him a slur!

  • So, they left Tih Minh at the gate like a stray kitten, and she's acting oddly, because the baddies gave her the blue rose potion of forgetfulness. So she can't even speak. Just like Stone!

  • Jacques, no! Don't yell at her!

  • It's less of a cliffhanger, and more of a gothic version of a Yevgeni Bauer movie.

So far, pretty standard Feuillade.

woman shares story about customers who lie (l) woman re-making a latte (r)

Another day, another allergy that only applies when it’s convenient. A woman sends her latte back because she’s “allergic to cow’s milk,” only for that concern to magically disappear the second butter and halloumi enter the chat.

The server, doing her due diligence, quickly realizes this isn’t a medical emergency at all. According to her, it’s an oat-milk personality trait. And just like that, the internet is once again divided into teams. Some debate whether this was a legitimate dietary nuance or just the boldest case of menu gaslighting to ever hit a brunch table.

January again???

Although January doesn't usually come with threats to invade Greenland. It's a mad, mad world... I have mostly been spending the new year feeling January-ish; it's wet and grey here and I've had a lingering bug that has not inclined me to do anything much more than look forward to the Winter Olympics* and spring in general, although I've enjoued my art class starting again. I would like some snow and have not seen more than a sprinkling. But I have read a couple of books worth noting:

The Burning Stones, by Antti Tuomainen. Not Nordic noir, but a comic crime story in which a middle-aged sauna stove company employee finds herself having to investigate the murder of a colleague. Thoroughly entertaining, though I had to decide it was set in "no lawyer AU world" as the sensible, competent protagonist would surely have rung a solicitor by the end of the first few chapters if only they existed. Introduced me to the word bumlet for small towels one sits on in saunas, which since it scarcely seems to exist on the internet, I can only assume that the translator picked up from the Anglophone community in Helsinki (or possibly invented independently).

Advent, by Gunnar Gunnarsson. Every year, in the middle of winter, farmhand Benedikt goes on a journey to rescue sheep that are lost in the mountains. Fantastic landscape descriptions, there's a real sense of time and place and the arduous nature of the journey and why he does it, although there is also the reader's inevitable moment of realisation, 'Oh, is this meant to be allegory and the shepherd Jesus?' On reflection after finishing it, I think it's meant to prompt the association, but not intended as allegory, other things are also going on, not least that the book is based on a true story. There is something of an early non-fiction novel about it. The afterward, interesting as it is, does not mention that Gunnar went on a 1940 lecture tour of Germany and met Hitler. Presumably, it was supposed that this would get in the way of the heartwarming Christmas novella marketing.

Over Christmas itself, I re-read Moreta, Dragonlady of Pern for the first time since I was about 15. It had less sex than I remembered (possibly because I first read it at 13, when sex in any book was remarkable), and on adult reflection is more of a tragedy brought about by class prejudice among dragonriders. Although post-COVID, there was some interesting elements of the flu pandemic that rang true in a way I hadn't previously recognised - at the point of writing, McCaffrey had lived through three, if none so deadly as the Spanish flu she was born just six years after.

*No, I have not seen Heated Rivalry. IMO ice hockey is the most boring Olympic sport, beating even curling, which takes some doing since even actual bowls (world championships currently being televised, I am not watching) is more exiting than curling. Still, I am happy for the fandom.

A photograph of shadows stretched over a night-dark cobbled street. Text overlaid on the image reads: From "Into the Split" by Tris Lawrence. Humans thought that if they shut out Talents, they could shut out the Shadows as well. They're wrong. The Shadows are more likely to prey on people with Talent, but in a pinch, they'll eat anyone. On Kickstarter NOW thru Jan. 28!

Our Kickstarter has one week left, and we’re less than $400 from our first stretch goal!

The third and finally book of the Twinned trilogy by Tris Lawrence is Into the Split, showing us a very different world than the one that the Pine Hills University students are used to. In this world, Nikolai – a young queer man with Dream powers – and his boyfriend/life partner/lover Seth – an Empath – are on the run from the Shadows, and it takes a magical mishap that threatens multiple worlds to bring them and the PHU crew into contact. However, from that risk is also opportunity: by combining their knowledge, skill, and Talent, they may just have what it takes to save everyone!

Blurb:

Watch out.
Don’t fall into the Split.

Nikolai is a Dreamwalker born into a family of Weather Witches. His boyfriend, Seth, is an Empath, anchoring him so that Nikolai won’t accidentally open a pathway between the physical world and the Dreamscape.

But Dreams are slippery things: they can attack, and they can trap, and Shadows live in the dark spaces between worlds. Shadows escaped the Dreamscape and came to Nikolai’s world when he was a child. They fed hungrily, drawn to those of strong Talent, killing Nikolai’s family and destroying his home.

Nikolai and Seth have have been on the run ever since.

When the veil between the Dreamscape and his world cracks open again, Nikolai is shocked to meet his doppelganger from another world, Nikita. Claiming that Nikolai’s life has been in her nightmares for months, Nikita promises to save him, but the actions of her and her friends draw the Shadows to them wherever they go. And worse yet, they quickly realize that their worlds are linked: if Nikita cannot save Nikolai, her own world may be lost as well…

Good lord, the only Oscar-nominated film of this year that I've seen so far is K-pop Demon Hunters, which was on some streaming service that I get, and since I'd read some buzz about it, I decided to watch it. I thought it not a bad film, certainly watchable. It reminded me of the movie of Josie and the Pussycats - incoherent premise (do they fight the demons with their voices, or not? Seems to have it both ways), enjoyable camaraderie among the band (which is also what I liked about the all-female Ghostbusters), not-intolerable music. In fact the songs here were much more agreeable than anything I've previously been handed with the label "K-pop" on it, though I don't plan on running out and listening to any more of it.

But looking at the films nominated for major awards, nothing grabs my interest. I don't want to see horror movies, which leaves out Sinners and Weapons, I don't want to see movies about torturing people or people in great suffering, which leaves out Bugonia and It Was Just an Accident and If I Had Legs I'd Kick You, I don't want to see movies about sports, which leaves out Marty Supreme and F1, I don't want to see a faithful adaptation of a novel I found terminally boring, which leaves out Frankenstein. I like Shakespeare so I ought to be interested in Hamnet, but the reviews make it sound dire; I like musical theater and its history so I ought to be interested in Blue Moon but the trailer made it sound whiny. If I were to see any of these, it'd probably be One Battle After Another, but the new films I've noted as possible watches haven't gotten Oscar nominations. I'm curious about The Choral, but it got bad reviews.

The Coming Storm

Okay! Based on doomscrolling through myriad weather reports, I can confidently predict that we will be getting anywhere from 1 and 145 inches of snow starting on Sunday, that the electricity will go out while the outside temps hover at 10° F, that I will die of hypothermia in my own bed, and that the kiskas will nibble my corpse.

If there was anywhere to run to, I'd run.

But there isn't.

My only consolation is that they say hypothermia is a very peaceful way to die. After you get cold, you feel oddly serene, you grow sleepy.

###

Today, I'm gonna put together an emergency kit: two flashlights, batteries, fully charged phone, full charged power bank, three gallons of water (the well here is on an electric pump), non-perishable food items (peanut butter, canned tuna, Pepperidge Farm goldfish, etc), manual can opener, thyroid meds—what else?

Need to spray some kind of oil on my car door's weather stripping, too, to minimize the risk that those doors will freeze shut. Olive oil will actually work, but I think I'm gonna go to the auto parts store & get lanolin-based Fluid Film.

Also, I have to get a wireless keyboard similar to a desktop computer's clunky black keyboard. At this point, my main challenge with tax preparation is not tax law but data entry. I've watched Rose do three returns now; she keys in all the numbers using her right hand & the right numeric keyboard. This is something I have never done because I only use laptop models at home. Proficiency at this would double my efficiency.

###

On the Universe, Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me? front: Justine & the collective house in Trumansburg resurfaced this week in a FB posting. I immediately private-messaged her: Still interested! Posted a public message: I PMed you, which she pinged with a pink love heart.

And then, last night, I noticed my public message had been deleted & somehow—I didn't even know you could do this!—my private message had been deleted.

I've been ghosted!

And that hurt my feelings terribly.

It is certainly your right to decide I am not a good fit for your collective. But why not just tell me? Why humiliate me by pretending that I don't exist?

Combined with my intense social isolation, financial worries, & the pending storm, this made for a stressful evening.

Resilience is the name of the game, & my mantra is ever, You do not live in Gaza, you do not live in sub-Saharan Africa, you do not live in...

But honestly, all this is hard.

This has been a very tough winter.

It will be better in the spring because it is always better in the spring.

###

In Work In Progress news, I'm 500 words into Chapter 5—phone conversation with Neal in which he chides Grazia for her growing intimacy with the New Millennium Kingdom cult and meditation on personal vs. impersonal friendships.

Next up, we must segue back to a Grazia/Debbie Reynolds convo where Debbie Reynolds talks about death, and then Debbie Reynolds appears in the ICU where Grazia takes care of her & she eventually dies. A thousand words? We'll see.

Nyan-nyan-ji in Kyoto, Japan

The Shinto religion is said to host over eight million deities that vary from nature spirits, to important historical figures, or even bunnies (link to bunny temple) However, a temple dedicated to cats still stands out. This is because it is not a temple at all, but an art project.

NyanNyan-ji is the life's work of Miyano Kaya, a cat artist who bought the house and converted it to the temple you can see today. Its most notable features are the large sliding doors painted with cat motifs by Kaya, and the Buddhist and Shinto type shrines that can be found in the heart of the building. Across the building art by Kaya and 130 other artists can he found and bought, ranging from shrine-like charms to paintings and prints, a must for cat lovers.

aiii, I have gone back through my posts, and the most recent of these that I've found is from last august. I am not going to attempt to work out what I have started or progressed; I will start with 'what I've finished' and if I still have any oomph (and it is not bed time) I'll go poke at what I've abandoned. In reverse chronological order. I'm putting the list in, and then maaaaybe I'll have the cope to put a commentary. (finished today but not yet reviewed: The Murder of Roger Ackroyd - Agatha Christie)... oh, and if I notice that it is a short story, I've left it out, because I think I captured that before.

  1. Bound by the Blood - Cecilia Tan. 4.5 stars. review - BDSM speculative erotica that is just so clever, but also very emotionally hard going.
  2. The Quest for Corvo: An Experiment in Biography - A.J.A. Symons. 4 stars. review - presented as a biography, but it reads as a story of an obsession, and the biographical details are highlights.
  3. The Siege of Burning Grass - Premee Mohamed. 3 stars. review - despite being well written, fantastic world building, good characterisation, passable plot I felt like I just missed the point.
  4. The House that Horror Built - Christina Henry. 2.5 stars review - I usually love Henry's work, and yet this one just never quite gelled for me. (content note: pandemic) 5.Nest - Inga Simpson. 5 stars. review - recommended for those who like slow moving slice of life stories; each chapter is a tiny lightly sketched moment that adds to a nuanced and complicated story of getting old, making mistakes, and reconciling with your past.
  5. Building a second brain: a proven method to organise your digital life and unlock your creative potential - Tiago Forte. 4. stars. review - some really good ideas, but dry and easy to put down and forget about it. I feel that 'less annoying than the majority of self-help books' is a low bar, but it cleared it.
  6. Digital Sociology - Deborah Lupton. 4 stars. review - There is a lot going on with this book, looking both at how sociology as a process / research field is changed by using digital tools, and how sociology of the digital world works.
  7. Angel of the Overpass - Seanan McGuire. 4 stars. review - very satisfying set of conclusions; well worth reading if you liked the previous ones. Possibly slightly darker horror than the last one.
  8. The Viy - Nikolai Gogol. 3.5 stars. review - This was well written, and individual scenes are great, but I don't think I understand how the story fits together.
  9. The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting - KJ Charles. 4.5 stars. review - I really enjoyed this, and finished it in an afternoon.
  10. Vertigo - Karen Herbert. 3 stars. review - I noted this as "a little thriller in a literary public service story"; I found it really hard to engage with
  11. The Invisible Library - Genevieve Cogman. 3.5 stars. review - excessively contrived plot, adversarial workplace relationships verging on farce, well written, complex full of interesting characters.
  12. The Coffee House Witch and the Grumpy Cat - Ariana Jade. 2 stars. review - The writing is good, but the entire thing is set up and no payoff. And for something marketed as a romance, it really isn't.
  13. A Sorceress Comes to Call - T. Kingfisher. 4 stars. review - solidly written fantasy / horror / regency romance with a heavy emphasis on body horror and loss of control, and I don't recommend it to people who have trauma over dangerous and controlling parents
  14. Bad Actors - Mick Herron. 2 stars. review - I listened to an interview by the author, this was the Slough House book I found in the library. Author loves their characters, but I found them so badly written.
  15. The Sea Mystery - Freeman Wills Crofts. 4 stars. review - perfectly readable murder mystery, more thinky and less personality driven in comparison to Agatha Christie.
  16. Once Upon a Tome: The Misadventures of a Rare Bookseller - Oliver Darkshire. 3.5 stars. review - lots of short, self-contained anecdotes. Dry and gets a bit same-old and repetitive.

Abandoned

  3. The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness Jonathan Haidt reason - came across as disingenuous
  4. The Pleasure of Drowning by Jean Bürlesk reason - do not share the author's sense of humour.

Thinking:

I feel like I've fallen into a creative dry spell. I finished sewing the pin loom blanket together yesterday. It turned out nice. But I don't know what to do next. I woke up from a dream last night (now I can't remember the dream) but when I woke up I started to think about making jewelry from some of the wonderful cabochons that I bought just before I quit jewelry fabrication work. Boulder opals. Then I thought about the fact that I'd have to sell them after I made them. I hated "selling". And I can't see as well as I used to. It's a struggle to do fine work now - that's a factor too. Though I haven't tried any jewelry work since I got these newest glasses. Making money with the art and craft supplies that I already have would not be a bad thing. We live on very little, because we make very little in our retirement. Having a purpose (making some extra money) would be good. I'm wondering what is my purpose? I can see that being a friend to others is good. Being a wife and housekeeper is good (even though I'm a terrible housekeeper at least I do keep certain important things clean). Being there for family is good. Taking care of our animals is good. Expressing myself with art is good. Though I feel very uninspired at the moment. Maybe it's the January/winter doldrums. I can remember in past years feeling uninspired and empty this time of the year. I don't like it much.

Waiting for some inspiration...

woman shares flight experience (l) united airlines plane (r)

A woman flew with United Airlines, only to hear what she described as the most perilous song while landing. “Hallelujah,” a classic written by Leonard Cohen and covered by thousands of artists across multiple genres, blasted through the speakers after the plane’s wheels touched the ground.

That moment struck a nerve, according to TikTok user Paige Ruder (@paigegettingpaid), who said flying already feels frightening amid recent plane crashes in the United States. She posted her experience with United Airlines in a video with over 4,000 views. That anxiety, combined with the plane playing a praise-filled song like “Hallelujah,” which is traditionally folk but sometimes bluesy, pushed Ruder toward unease rather than calm.

I have never been one to care too much about the amount of protein a meal has, but sometimes I see a recipe on Instagram that boasts low calories and high protein and actually looks good, and I find myself tempted to try them out. I mean, if I can eat something healthy-ish and it tastes good, then it’s a win-win, right?

So, after seeing this Buffalo Chicken Hot Pocket recipe, I decided to give it a shot. It seemed like as good a place as any to start with higher protein meals.

Even though the recipe looks long, it’s all pretty simple ingredients, though I did have to go buy quite a few.

So let’s talk about how “quick and easy” it was to make this, how much I had to buy to make it, the time it took, how many dishes it made, and if it actually tasted good.

Diving right in, the first thing was acquiring the ingredients. I shopped at Kroger.

First up, I had to buy a pack of chicken, which ended up being Simple Truth Natural Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast Family Pack for $16.52. I used all this chicken even though it was a big ol’ family pack. Next was Sweet Baby Ray’s Mild Buffalo Wing Sauce for $4.29. I used almost the entire bottle. A block of Philadelphia Reduced Fat Cream Cheese was $3.49. The recipe only needed about a fourth of the block. The recipe calls for a 0% fat Greek yogurt, so I picked Oikos Triple Zero Plain Greek Yogurt, which has zero added sugar, zero artificial sweeteners, and is zero percent fat with eighteen grams of protein (per 6oz serving). I used most of the 32oz container, which was $6.79.

Though I have all-purpose flour, bread flour, and gluten-free flour, I did not have self-rising flour, so I bought King Arthur Unbleached Self-Rising Flour in a five pound bag for $6.29. For the mozzarella, I usually like Sargento’s shredded mozzarella because it’s the only whole milk one I tend to find, but since the recipe specifies a fat free mozzarella, I just went with Kroger Low-Moisture Part Skim shredded mozzarella in the 4-cup size bag for $3.99. I picked Jack’s Special Mild Salsa for my “tomato salsa” which was $4.99 but I have most of the container left over. I also bought Simple Truth Organic Chives for $2.49. And last but not least I bought a Hidden Valley Ranch Seasoning 1oz packet for a whopping $2.39.

I had Daisy brand cottage cheese on hand already, both the whole milk version and the low-fat version, but for this recipe I used the whole milk type since it didn’t specify. Oh, and I used actual whole milk for the quarter cup of fat-free milk it calls for. You’ll just have to live with my substitution.

So, in total, I spent $51.24 on stuff for just this one recipe. I always say you can’t cook dinner without spending fifty bucks, and boy oh boy does that remain true. I swear it’s a literal constant in my life.

Moving on from cost, the first thing to do was to add a bunch of stuff into the Crockpot and let it get cooking. That part was really easy, you just throw the chicken in and add all the spices and whatnot on top, give it a mix and let it cook on high for a couple hours. The only dishes I used for this portion were measuring spoons and a measuring cup. Disclaimer: I did not add the white onion, therefore I saved myself from using a knife and cutting board.

While that was cooking, I blended all the ingredients for the sauce together. I only have a very tiny portable blender meant for protein shakes and smoothies on the go (don’t ask why because I don’t even know), so I had to do it in three or four batches, which meant I mixed everything together in a bowl and then put a couple ladles worth into the blender, blended it and dumped the blended mixture into a separate bowl. Due to my unnecessary steps, you probably will not make as many dirty dishes as I did here. Or as much of a mess on your countertop.

After the sauce was completed, I got to work on the dough. This part was definitely the most time consuming, partially because I decided to be precise and weigh out my ten dough balls to make sure they were perfectly equal. The dough took some work to come together, but after enough kneading, it got there. This portion of the recipe really only took a measuring cup and a bowl, plus the rolling pin to roll out the dough. I set my dough discs aside.

Finally, when the chicken was cooked through, I was very surprised by how much liquid there was in the Crockpot. In the video, when he goes to shred the chicken after its time in the Crockpot, it’s completely dry. I was perplexed why there was liquid in mine, especially when I actually used 100g more chicken breast than the recipe called for. I didn’t want to add my creamy sauce to it while there was so much watery liquid, but I also didn’t want to dump the liquid out of the Crockpot and waste all the flavor that was probably in there.

So, I got to work shredding the chicken to see if it would absorb more as I went. Sure enough, the liquid did reduce quite a bit after the shredding, which took forever and gave my arms a workout. I decided to let the chicken and liquid keep cooking with the lid off for a little bit to see if some of the liquid would cook off or evaporate, and when it finally got decently reduced, I went ahead and added the creamy sauce mixture and all the mozzarella cheese.

It ended up shaping up nicely, and looked like the mixture in the video. All in all, it worked out, it just took extra time. To be fair, the video said cook on high for 2-3 hours and I only did two since the chicken was up to temp.

For the dough discs, I definitely overstuffed the first one, and some of the filling spilled out into the skillet while cooking it. After the hot pocket had been thoroughly browned on both sides, I figured it was done, but when I cut into it, the dough hadn’t cooked all the way through. Though the outside was brown and crispy, the inside was pretty much raw dough. If it had been cooked any longer, though, the outside would’ve burned. I wasn’t sure how to get the inside fully cooked without burning the outside, so this was certainly a predicament.

Plus, my hot pockets were much more oddly shaped than the ones in the video. I couldn’t get a consistent shape and kept second guessing how much filling to put in. It also was pretty time consuming trying to form the hot pockets, and I ended up tearing like two of them. I was definitely frustrated by now, it felt like nothing was working out and I was messing everything up.

After taking a breather and finally eating one of the hot pockets that was cooked through mostly well enough, I am sad to report it was pretty mid. It was fine, but definitely not as good as I had hoped, and definitely not worth fifty dollars and a few hours of work. Though if you consider the fact you get ten hot pockets out of this recipe, it’s only five dollars per hot pocket if you spend fifty on ingredients. I guess that’s not too bad, but I think my feelings of disappointment overshadowed the value of being able to freeze the majority for later.

I will say that there was a pretty decent amount of the chicken filling leftover, whether it’s because I filled the hot pockets the wrong amount or not remains to be seen, but I did like putting the leftover chicken mixture in a tortilla instead. Honestly my main issue with this recipe was the dough. Having the chicken mixture by itself or in a different carb vehicle actually improved my eating experience, I think.

So I would say if you make this recipe, don’t make the dough, and just find something else to put the chicken in, or eat it by itself. Though, there will be less protein in the recipe since the dough was made with protein yogurt. I think that’s worth the trade, though.

Overall, I don’t think I’ll be making this recipe again, but it wasn’t terrible or anything.

Do you like Buffalo chicken? Have you tried Oikos protein yogurt in any of their sweeter/fruitier flavors? Let me know in the comments, and have a great day!

“It’s always so obvious that their bickering is just romantic tension, you know?” Ratthi commented on the play they’d just seen.

Bickering was certainly something it did a lot, but that should be proof that bickering wasn’t romantic actually, even if it was with ART- Oh no, it thought.
