One thing I forgot to mention: One neat thing about picking anthologies that are studied in school (100 People, 1 Poem Each in Japanese as well as this) is that there's a TON of commentaries available explaining things to confused students. Some of it is no doubt parroting traditional interpretations, which as you know Bob can be of dubious reliability, but at least it's a native-speaker's understanding. (With enough experience, I'll be better at telling when a commentator is talking out their hat.)
