It does not offer the false hope that all depressions will eventually get better (on their own). It could be argued that giving one (and it'd be simple enough to add an arduous path leaving the city) would undercut the power of its depiction of depression. A counter-argument could be that Thompson was too in love with the idea of ending with Durer's Melancholy to consider a conclusion that winds up the themes better.
