    Christ brings his will to light,
Since the barren staff the pilgrim bore
    Bloomed in the great Pope’s sight?

Unless I'm misreading, and that refers to another medieval legend about divine will manifested as a staff blossoming before the Pope? (Wouldn't surprise me if that was a trope in multiple stories, if it came to that.)
