Well, it was a summer job in a research lab -- over a couple summers -- when I was a teen. I continued using FORTRAN into grad school, where I had a minor in computational methods in physics. If it became a novel (unlikely), it's probably be a YA. Certainly there were enough mishaps, personal and professional, over those years to fill our a plot.
