When Yotsuba gets in trouble, she gets called on it (well, after the first couple chapters, anyway) instead of being cooed at for being so cute. That's what avoids the icky-poo sweet.
I actually kinda liked Romeo + Juliet, but it's a very different kind of adaptation.
