It's the time of year where best-of-the-year lists get posted, even though there's still a couple weeks for something better to show up -- go fig. Anyway, the best list I've seen so far* is Give Me Something to Read's list of best articles and essays they've linked to, which slants toward journalism over 3000 words. Some truly excellent and interesting writing here, most of which I hadn't seen before. Which only goes to show I really ought to be reading the site more often.
