larryhammer: floral print origami penguin, facing left (disappearance)
Item: Back from a week and a half of camping in the mountains of New Mexico, attending Sirens, and visiting parents.

Subitem: We found a forested campground at the end* of 40 miles of one-lane gravel roads, on the shore of a small reservoir. The altitude was 7300 feet and autumn had washed the grasslands brown. We shared the forty sites with at most two other groups, usually fewer, and they were always down on the lakeshore while we at the top end of the loop, under the ponderosa pines. Turkey vultures abounded, and ravens, bald eagle, and great blue herons were also seen. It was very relaxing, even with the daily (sometimes nightly) thunderstorms.

Subitem: Still on information overload about the conference. It was a lot of fun, meeting and remeeting several people, and the presentations gave me much to think about -- as such, I ran out of origami paper the second day. My best origami paper, too. Actual reports, check the LJs/DWs of other attendees.

Subitem: Parentals are slowly recovering from their cruise down the Danube from Pudapest to near the Black Sea. They regret that they're getting old enough this was likely their last overseas trip. Alas.

Item: If anything happened this month that you think I probably need to know about, give a holler. I'm too crunched by work deadlines to go back.

Item: Speaking of which, it's time for the biannual reading list culling. Insert standard rant about LJ calling it a "friends list" instead of "reading list" and the continual breaking of their promise to split the artificially compounded functions of granting access and aggregating for reading. It's not you -- it's me being overloaded, as I was even before vacation. I'll add back as I have time in the month or three to come.

Item: This is a news website article about a scientific paper. (via)

* That's a small lie: the road did continue on, but marked as "limited use" after that point. We saw a road-grader head up it, but it returned after less than an hour. Ah, Forest Service, we do like you so.
