Entertaining fourth-wall breakage: In a later volume of Hwang Mi Ri's Hot Blooded Woman, <spoiler> tries to get romantic with the gang-leader heroine, getting far enough into his spiel that shoujo feathers start floating around them -- which makes her break out in hives, as if in allergic reaction to real feathers. Now that's genre-aware comedy.
2. Take Hikaru no Go, replace go with shogi, the boys with bishoujos, and the ghost story with a psychological thriller, and you have something pretty close Shion no Ou. Note, however, that this process also leaches out the heroinlike addictiveness.
3. I would just like to point out that I remain not at all bitter at the continuing TOTAL ABSENCE OF ACTUAL PENGUINS from Penguin Revolution. Worlds of not bitter, I tell you. WORLDS.
