"you're wanted by the law / and my wife thinks you're dead"
Scene from a coffee shop near campus: at the table next to me is an older man (greeted as "Doc" by someone) reading a paperback of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo; beyond him, a young woman has stopped working on what looked like a paper for an education course and is now reading The Girl Who Played with Fire; beyond her, a middle-aged woman sits down with a small stack of university library books but then pulls out The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest to read.
All while I poke at a poem in classical Japanese. Clearly, I am not au courant.
ETA: Today's Get Fuzzy is also relevant.

If we told them, "Wait!"
and they did not scatter but
stayed on the branches,
what would we [think better of/prefer/feel more affection for/???/argh]
than the cherry blossoms?
?
