Well, I read a lot of slightly later stuff in German studies many years ago, so the form isn't new. I never was much for all the gutting and smiting, though I loved the bits of social interaction and so forth in and around the bloodshed. So far, it's bringing all that back. (My favorite was Erec, which was thin on hacking and sacking, and long on medieval town life.)
